Newsletter Week 5, Term 2

St Michael's Catholic School Rotorua, Wednesday 1st June

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Tēnā koutou kātoa e te whānau,

It has been a very busy few weeks at St Michael's and it is hard to believe we are almost half way through the term.

This week the Year 3 - 6 children are travelling daily to the Aquatic Centre to participate in the 'Making a Difference Water Safety Programme.' This programme is a joint initiative of Swim Rotorua Swimming Club and Rotorua Magic Swim School. Funding for this programme comes from Baytrust, the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust and Water Safety New Zealand who all deem water safety and swimming to be a vital life skill. We are very fortunate to be offered the opportunity to participate in this programme so I thank the children who are taking up the challenge and remembering to bring their togs to school every day.

It is unfortunate that we had to cancel our school cross country on Wednesday, but with the deluge that we experienced on Monday we felt the Redwoods would be too wet and unsafe for our children to run. Our senior children will have the opportunity later in the week to participate in a shortened course around school.

Today we welcomed Bruce Norman from 'Gabriel's Presence' to our school to lead the children in singing. Bruce will be coming into school every Wednesday to teach our children new songs that we can sing at Masses. We are very grateful to Bruce for giving up his time for us. We are also looking for someone in our community who is able to play the guitar for our Kapa Haka group. If you know anyone who would be keen to offer an hour a week, can you please let Whaea Kelly know.

On Thursday at 9am the Icon, Ko Hāta Maria, te Matua Wahine o te Atua - Holy Mary, Mother of God will be visiting our school. Our school community is welcome to come and pray with us and share a cup of tea afterwards.

On Friday we invite our school community to celebrate Pentecost with a liturgy lead by Eden 6. Pentecost is celebrated on the 50th day from Easter Sunday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks. Jesus’ followers were all together when a sound like the blowing of a mighty wind came from heaven. What appeared to be tongues of fire separated and rested on each of them, they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages.

The children from Eden would love our school community to join us in the hall at 2pm.

On Wednesday next week we have our Goal Setting Parent/ Teacher Meetings. Please make sure you make a time to meet with your child's teacher. This day is a Teacher Only Day but our support staff will be on hand to look after any children who are unable to stay at home for the day. Please let your child's classroom teacher know if your child is required to attend school on Wednesday 8 June.

Have a great week whanau,

Ma te Atua koutou e manaaki,

Rachael McLanachan

Message from Fr Thomas

My Dear Parishioners and Friends Kia Ora!

We hope and pray that all our parishioners and visitors keep well and safe in the hands of God through the intercession of Mary, Mother of God Assumed into heaven. We see in the Acts of the Apostles 2:12-14, ‘the disciples of Jesus together with Mary the mother of Jesus and other women waiting in prayer for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit’. Same way just before the Pentecost (28th May to 2nd June), we are privileged to be with the ICON of Mary Mother of God and pray as a parish community.

The name of the Icon is: Ko Hāta Maria, te Matua Wahine o te Atua

Translation: Holy Mary, Mother of God.

What is the Icon?

To celebrate the rededication of Aotearoa New Zealand to Mary, Mother of God,

Assumed into Heaven, our Bishops commissioned a new piece of art. They wanted a depiction of Mary that connects her to our country. The piece challenges us to see her as a woman of incredible strength and the place she holds in our hearts and our community today.

Concept

Damian Walker worked with Anthony Kemp to develop a piece that highlighted the journey of the Catholic faith to the Māori, via the first French missionaries.

The image presents the fusion between a traditional Māori outlook, built around marae, whanau, whakapapa and kaitiaki, and the Catholic faith, centred on the whanau of God, with its own marae, whakapapa and kaitiaki. The duo wanted to capture and share the theme of unity. The artwork itself aims to encourage a shared desire for us all to live in harmony together.

Invitation to participate actively in Masses and Veneration of the ICON:

We invite all of you the people of God in Rotorua to come in large numbers as individuals, families, and groups to pray and grow in our devotion to Mary Mother of God Assumed into Heaven and renew our dedication to her.

Confirmation and First Holy Communion:

Let us offer our 86 children who are preparing to receive the sacrament on the Pentecost day into the hands of God, together with their parents and sponsors and pray for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Praying for peace in the world, let us be peacemakers at home and in society. As

I thank you for the expression of your love towards Fr Prakash, we wish him a happy and safe journey, joyful time with parents, family, and Claretian Community.

Thanking you for your prayers and concern when I was unwell,

Yours in the Heart of Mary,

Fr Thomas cmf.
