Good Ergonomics Prevent Discomfort and Injuries
When working from home, many of us have a lot of distractions, so details about where or how you are going to do your work should not be one of them.
Right now, many of us are working from home and below are some simple guidelines to prevent irritating back, neck, or wrist pain- no matter what your workspace looks like:
When setting up a computer workstation:
- Place elbows at a 90-degree angle
- Keep wrists away from sharp or hard edges (in a neutral position)
- Your mouse should be same height and distance from the screen as the keyboard
- Make sure lower back is supported
- Knees and hips should both be at a 90-degree angle
- Feet should be flat on the floor
- Keep top of the monitor at or slightly below eye level- and do not sit too close (at least 24-inches away)
Use whatever you have around the house to accomplish these, i.e., a book or boxes to prop up feet that do not touch the floor, boxes to prop up your monitor, or a towel under wrists for sharp edges, etc.
EYE SAFETY
It's easy to get lost in what you're doing; be sure to take breaks occasionally to loosen and stretch your body and reduce the strain on your eyes.
Here are a few more eye safety tips:
- Do not forget to blink! (creates tears and keeps eyes fresh)
- Look away from your screen often (at least every 20 min-, more is better)
- Check your lighting, are there glares? (having a desk lamp nearby can help)
Even if your workspace doesn't have the same items as your office or the picture below, you can still use the principles above to make your workstation comfortable and efficient during this unprecedented period.
Thanks for all your hard work and continuing to put Safety- First and Foremost, even at home!
