Positive Paths: Bad Days and When to Ask for Help
I have seen a lot of students struggle these past few years with the COVID pandemic and the seemingly unending stress of today’s social changes. Even as an adult, I also feel at times overwhelmed and down about circumstances that are mostly out of my control. I feel that everyone has bad days and good days in life. Here are some things that I feel we all need to know about bad days and when we need to ask for help.
Firstly, we all can make a decision to see our lives as learning journeys that are always evolving and changing, mostly for the good as we age. As young teens and young adults, often the changes are rapid, sometimes seemingly out of control, and very overwhelming. I know that I have seen a lot of changes in society just in my lifetime. Teens can have a lot of joy in being young with so much to look forward to in life, but often that is overshadowed by the immense pressure they feel from peers, social media, school, and parents and teachers–even those who love them and want to support them. If you can, try to remember that the bad day is temporary, and the sense of feeling out of control or overwhelmed is often temporary. Find a good friend or teacher or counselor or another adult to speak honestly with if you need a listening ear. Write a letter or an email to a buddy to ask for his or her or their input about your feelings if you need help. Express your feelings on bad days, and allow yourself to breathe and just get centered.
What is the difference between a “bad day” and when a person might need some real help? Here are a few markers I have learned over the years as a teacher and as a human being. A bad day is just that. Markers of a more serious issue with depression will last two weeks or more. You are angry or sad with no break in the mood. You feel hopeless or want to harm yourself or others. You can’t sleep or can’t seem to get enough sleep.
Your appetite changes for more than a few days, a week, or longer. You seem disconnected from your friends and family. There is a more detailed list below via the link. If you feel any of these things or see these things in someone you love —reach out to someone you trust for help. We are all here to help each other. Remember, bad days are temporary.
