From the Principals

Dear Leighton Families,

Our Leighton halls have been buzzing with the sounds of sights of the holiday season! Our 5th Grade band can be found in the lunchroom offering some holiday cheer during lunch times, and our staff elf on a shelf has been making an appearance in the staff lunchroom, work areas, and office to have a little fun before the holidays. We also had a great week kicking off Spirit Week. I would venture to say we have the most spirit..just check out our Fourth Grade teachers Mrs. Bruder and Mrs. Hartman above! Our Aurora for Others district wide event was a huge success with total earning topping out at $30, 573.85 . Wow! We are so humbled and grateful! Please find more updates in regards to Aurora for Others below.

We are looking forward to Winterfest this upcoming week on Wednesday, December 21st. See more information below! Thank you in advance to all of our Leighton Families for helping with Winterfest and, once again, making this a great event and memory for our learners!

For our Third Grade families, please be on the lookout for your child's Third Grade score reports and parent letters in regards to the Fall AIR State Tests coming home the first few weeks in January. We are waiting to receive our parent letters from the State and they are expected shortly. We are looking forward to celebrating our learners successes with you and continuing to help them grow!

As always, I like to end each message with a note of gratitude! Thank you so very much for all of your support, partnership, and teamwork this school year. We appreciate and value the committement of our educational community to helping us ensure the best possible learning environments for our learners to help them reach their fullest potential. From our Leighton Family to yours, Happy Holiday! We wish each of our families a happy, restful, and joyous Holiday season!

Kind Regards,

Michelle Nizen, Building Principal

WINTERFEST: Wednesday, December 21st

We are so excited to be bringing Winterfest back to Leighton this year!

Winterfest celebrations will be held in place of the winter class parties, with students rotating through activity stations in their grade hallways and classrooms (similar to an indoor field day).

Winterfest will be held on December 21st at the following times:

3rd grade: 9:15am-11am

4th & 5th grade: 1:30pm-3:10pm

See more information below in our PTO section!

Spotlight on PBIS!

We have been off to a great start with teaching, learning, and reinforcing, our 3 pillars of being respectful, responsible, and problem solvers. Our 3 pillars make up the heart of our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports framework in our K-5 Elementary Buildings. Each week teachers have taught and reinforced these 3 pillars and what each of them looks like and sounds like in all areas of the school. This has been followed by teaching and reinforcing our 11 "focus skills" which support students in making good behavior choices and positively reinforces those choices so we continue to support and promote the prosocial behaviors we want to see! This week's focus skill was " I can be a good digital citizen ".

Students are hard at work earning poms and filling up their classroom jars! When these jars are filled, student bring their classroom jars to the office and empty them into the Building Wide Pom Pom Pail!!

We have most recently filled up our third Pom Pom Pail and enjoyed a PJ and Movie event!! Our Pom Pom Pail located in the office is filling fast as excitement builds for our next building wide event!

"Platinum platter" award winners abound as our classes are doing a great job demonstrating our 3 pillars during lunch and recess. Classes are always working to earn "positive compliments" during lunch and recess. Every two weeks, classes who earn the most "positive compliments" earn the right to display the "platinum platter" outside their classroom door for all to see and enjoy popsicles at lunch or an extra recess with Mrs. Nizen and Mr. Lehman.

Pom Pom Shout Out are shared over the announcements every day where we acknowledge students who have earned a special shout out for outstanding efforts in demonstrating our 3 pillars in their academic or behavioral pursuits. Students will receive a pom pom shout out classroom reward and those names are entered into a monthly drawing to pick out of our PBIS store at the end of the month.

We will also be discussing possible options for the Spring Mother (Important Person)/Son event and would love for you to bring your ideas and input to the meeting.

Tickets are a discounted rate of $23.00 - this is a paper form sign up; forms should have arrived home with your students before Thanksgiving break and a copy is attached as well. The deadline to turn in forms and payment is December 21st.

GIVING TREE

The Leighton Giving Tree Project has successfully ended and the Center of Hope was overwhelmed by the generosity of our students and families. Together, our schools provided over 400 gift cards to help children and families in need this holiday season! These cards went to the Center of Hope, an organization which will be helping 654 children this holiday season. They also provided 800 boxes of food to help feed families in need at Thanksgiving, and will do so again at Christmas. In addition to the collected gift cards, our schools also collected a significant number of hats, gloves and scarves to support our Leighton Leaders' service project.

A sincere thank you to all of the families who participated in this opportunity to give back to others in need within our community!

LEIGHTON HOLIDAY SHOP

Our Leighton Holiday Shop also successfully concluded last week. What a fun week it was for students and volunteers alike! It's always great to see the excitement from the students as they shop and pick out gifts for family and friends at this event. The Leighton Holiday Shop raised $2,557 this year to help further support our elementary schools.

A huge THANK YOU to our Holiday Shop Chairs - Katie Stump, Erin Toler, Neha Gupta, Bridget Sable and Alyssa Hicks - and to all of the parents who volunteered their time to help set up/clean up and help the students shop!

AURORA FOR OTHERS

Students throughout the school district had a great time participating in the Aurora for Others collection last week!

Aurora for Others is an independent program that began 15 years ago at Aurora High School and has now become a district wide program. This year they have a very special initiative! All collected funds will be used to buy adaptive playground equipment for Leighton Elementary School. This is a big undertaking that will benefit ALL of the children in our community - every one should have the opportunity to play with their peers!

Leighton collected for this initiative as a class coin war that took place during students' lunches last week. Students stepped up to the challenge and had a great time competing against other grades and raising as much as they could for this important cause.

Thank you to Jen Simmerman and Kasie Stewart for leading this initiative, and to the AHS students who volunteered their time to count and roll all of the donations!

MINDFUL MORNINGS

Thank you to everyone who voted on whether or not the AEPTO should purchase Mindful Morning materials for Leighton. Out of 163 responses, 75.5% voted to approve it at the full amount ($1,705). AEPTO will work with third grade teachers, Mrs. McNally and Mrs. Bindus, to provide the funds for them to make Mindful Mornings a reality.

WINTERFEST

December 21st

We are so excited to be bringing Winterfest back to Leighton this year!

Winterfest celebrations will be held in place of the winter class parties, with students rotating through activity stations in their grade hallways and classrooms (similar to an indoor field day).

Winterfest will be held on December 21st at the following times:

3rd grade: 9:15am-11am

4th & 5th grade: 1:30pm-3:10pm

All volunteer spots have been filled - thank you to everyone who was able and willing to volunteer your time! Volunteers should receive additional information from our chairs on Monday, but please feel free to reach out with any questions or if you do not receive the volunteer email.

Again, a huge THANK YOU to our Winterfest chairs - Alyssa, Hicks, Lindsey Twarogowski, Megan Grasso, Neha Gupta, and Nicole Swope - for planning this fun event for our school!

SCHOOLZE

As we head into the new year, AEPTO will continue to make the transition to the Schoolze app for communication. We will begin posting AEPTO updates on the app/website beginning in January, and will continue to move reminders and updates there as well (phasing out the Facebook page). We are also looking to move volunteer sign ups and fundraising events to Schoolze as well. Our goal is to streamline AEPTO communication and processes and we are very excited about bringing this to our schools, but please remember this is new for everyone. We will work to minimize any issues and address them as quickly as possible should they arise!

PTO members should have received an email invite to join the Schoolze app. If you haven't already, we encourage you to join to help avoid missed communication. Non PTO members can also access some of the posted information by visiting https://auroraelementarypto.org.

If you have any questions or concerns related to Schoolze, please reach out to Stacy Golding at Auroraptopres@gmail.com.

Hot Lunches/ Lunch Menu

Reminder

The "no-cost" lunch program will no longer be provided by the government for the upcoming 2022-23 school year. Students will again be required to pay for their lunches. If a family feels they may qualify-permanently or temporarily-for the 'Free and Reduced Lunch Program', then please have the form filled-out and submitted prior to the school year. The link for this form and the lunch menu for each day can be found on the ACSD's home page under "Forms & Links" (https://www.aurora-schools.org/District/Links-Forms).

Please be sure to keep tabs on your child’s lunch account balance to avoid going into a negative balance. We will always ensure all students have access to eat lunch, but it is appreciated by our lunch staff if a positive balance can be maintained.

Two ways to pay for school lunches: Parents can either send their student in with money to pay for lunches (and they can bring in any amount essentially) or pay online! Parents can go to the Aurora Schools Website and go to Lunch Accounts on the left side under the quick links tabs to get to the MY Payments Plus section and add money to their kids account in this manner as well. The cafeteria staff would appreciate any efforts to pay in advance online if possible over bringing in money. If you have any questions please reach out to Brandon Zimmerman at Bzimmerman@aurora-schools.org.

Here is the link for My Payments Plus:

https://www.mypaymentsplus.com/welcome

We are excited to be working with a new food service provider called the Nutrition Group! They are working to provide balanced and healthy meals to our children each day.

Please reach out to Sal Arquilla at sarquilla@aurora-schools.org for any questions.

Car Riders: Arrival and Dismissal Reminders

Just a few important reminders in regards to pick up and drop off for car riders to continue to help us maintain a smooth, safe, and efficient pick up and drop off. Thank you so much for your support and help in following our safety procedures.

1. Please pull all the way up to the "unloading" zone at the top of the car line when dropping off or picking up. This allows us to load as many students as possible into their cars.

2. Please exit on the passenger side only as getting out on the other side presents safety issues for students.

3. Please DO NOT pull around cars unless a teacher motions you around. This is for the safety of our students. At times, cars may be stopped to wait for a student to get in. Please wait for the adult outside to motion cars through the traffic flow pattern.

4. Please make sure your child is ready to exit when they reach the front of the car line .

5. Please be sure to have your orange tag in your car window visibly so staff can see it when calling students to cars. If you need another orange tag, please ask a staff member who is outside.

Thank you for your help in making the car line run as smoothly and safely as possible.

Transportation Information

We are no longer mailing out transportation information. You can go to: https://versatransweb04.tylertech.com/Aurora/elinkrp/Login.aspx (cut & paste into your browser or use the button link below.)

The login information is as follows:

User name = jane.smith (That is the student's first name period last name with no spaces) Password = students date of birth 01012021 with no characters or spaces between mmdayyear

Once you are in, go to "Work with students" and then "View my students"; you should see all your students to choose from. Routes do change from time to time when new students are added so please check back over the next week to ensure your pick-up and drop-off times.

All students are assigned a bus route using their home address. If your child will be using an alternative stop such as a daycare or caregiver, please make sure you submit an alternative bus stop form as soon as possible.

We also now have GPS on all of the school buses. You can see when the bus is to arrive at your home. Download the app "versatrans my stop" from the app store and sign in the same as above. If you have any questions or concerns with transportation, please email us at transportationinfo@aurora-schools.org and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Note, we are never sure how many students will be riding the buses. Once schools open we will make necessary adjustments for buses that may be full.

Thank you and have a safe school year, Transportation Department

Important Transportation Reminder

Please be sure to send a note to the office and the classroom teacher when students have a change of transportation on any given day. This will help our office staff know if a student who is typically a bus rider is being picked up on a certain day and vice versa.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Drop off cart

Many of you have probably noticed the gray cart next to main entrance buzzer and wondered what it is for. To make it easier for families to drop off materials for students there is a gray cart outside the main office doors. Often times students might forget a lunch, instrument, or binder and a parent will drop it off so we can get it to their student. We use this cart system as part of our safety protocols as we work limit the amount of traffic coming in and out of the building each day. If you are dropping something off for a student, we just ask that you use one of the sticky notes and pen to write your students and name, and their teacher's name, and place it on the cart. We will make sure it makes it to your student. You may also buzz in to let the main office know you are dropping off an item.

Please use the following link: https://aurora-oh.finalforms.com

Clinic Updates

Please remember that when you take your child out of school for a doctor or dentist appointment, the State of Ohio requires that a doctor's note be brought back to the school for attendance purposes. You can give the note to the secretaries in the main office. If you have any questions, please contact Joy Sharrotta at the main office at 330-954-2206 or email her at jsharrotta@aurora-schools.org

As a reminder, please monitor your child for any illness -related symptoms and contact our school nurse if you have any questions. We appreciate your attention to this.

  • Check your child each day for any signs of illness. If your child has a temperature of 100 degrees or greater, vomiting or diarrhea they need to stay home. For cold/flu-like symptoms such as cough, congestion and sore throat that are not well contained, it is preferred they stay home. If you would like your student to have cough drops at school, please send them in with a note or email the clinic.
  • Students sent home with a fever, vomiting or diarrhea may not return to school until they are free of these symptoms without medication for 24 hours. This means if your child was sent home in the afternoon he/she may not be able to return to school the next day. If your child returns too soon, our school nurse may be calling for you to come to pick him/her up if your child is not feeling well. Thank you for your support and efforts in this area.
  • We have COVID-19 home testing kits available that we can send home with any child or family should you question symptoms or exposure. We will be able to answer any questions about these kits should the need arise.

  • Please make sure your Final Forms medical information is up to date. We will closely read the health sections to address any medical concerns.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Tanski in the clinic at 330-954-2285 or email her at atanski@aurora-schools.org.
