- (Be) Yourself
Empathy is the one human capacity that allows us to link minds and hearts across cultures and generations to transform our lives. (Maria Szalavitz and Bruce Perry). The best way to teach children empathy is to be emphatic. Listening carefully and watching others while putting our own reactions aside and focusing on another's experience teaches our children empathy. We cannot know exactly what someone else is feeling or thinking but we can model for our children understanding using both our heart and our head.
Empathy is the accurate understanding
of another person's internal experiences. It has nothing
to do with agreeing or disagreeing with that experience.
Unlike sympathy, it makes no assumptions about
how the other person is feeling.

Below is a short video featuring Dr. Borba sharing her insights and recommendations regarding building empathy in our children.

PTA: Reflections 2018-2019
This year's PTA Reflections theme is Heroes Around Me.
it’s a great time to start getting inspiration for our annual PTA Reflections Program projects! Start thinking about the people in your world who are heroes. Are they someone whose job is to help people? Are they someone who volunteers in the community? Are they kids helping grown-ups? Or grown-ups helping kids? Are they people helping animals? Or animals helping people?
We can’t wait to see how those heroes inspire you through the arts! Review the current standing rules at the Michigan PTA Reflections website. More information to come! Get creative!
