School News You Can Use!

September 25, 2020
Good Afternoon Walden Families,

I hope you had a wonderful week! We know there were a lot of moving pieces as we transitioned as a school into our Hybrid Model of learning as well as welcomed our kindergartners back into school yesterday. Next week, we look forward to 1st and 2nd graders joining us in-person on Tuesday and 3rd grade on Thursday! Hooray! Please take a moment to watch the informational video about our protocols and procedures for in-person learning shared below. This will share information on how we are coordinating arrival, dismissal, earliest times to enter school, bathroom protocols, etc. Your child may find this video helpful as well!

I have also attached another video below that I would recommend for all parents to watch. It has to do with our exclusion guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health. This video explains when your child may not be able to come to school due to health reasons, why they may need to stay home, and for how long. Let's hope we have very few families who will need to know this, but for your own planning, it's helpful to be aware of these protocols if your child is coming to school for in-person instruction.

Just as a reminder, we have no school on Monday and we will see you back at school on Tuesday! Have a wonderful weekend!

Health Requirements

We recognize and are mindful of the fact that many families may have had difficulty getting children in for physical, dental, and eye exams as the COVID-19 pandemic presented many challenges to routine medical care; however, at this time, all child-health related requirements for school attendance, remain in effect for children in public, private, or parochial schools, as per 105 ILCS 5/27-8.1.

Health-related examinations and immunization requirements are due no later than October 15. There is no language in the Code that differentiates on-site/physical learning vs. remote/distance learning. Therefore all students are required to have the necessary documentation completed by October 15.

At this point in time you will have already received communication from our building nurse if your child is currently missing the required documentation. Students not in compliance with the health examination and immunization requirements will be excluded from school beginning Thursday, October 15, 2020. Please reach out with any questions as we want to partner with you to ensure compliance with these requirements. Thank you.

Beginning in our hybrid model, all specials classes will include opportunities to connect synchronously with teachers for both specials. What was formerly shared as a "video" lesson from our specials teachers, are now going to become Zoom lessons. We are happy that the new hybrid schedule makes it possible for our specials teachers to be synchronously available to students via Zoom for all specials. We encourage all students to get to their specials on time! Thank you!

Walden Playgrounds

We understand that with the lunch break in the middle of our day, many students and families are enjoying spending time on the Walden school grounds for lunch or socializing. We ask that families do their best to wear masks and social distance when around our school and in the community at large. The playground equipment is not sanitized through the park district so be conscientious of hand hygiene and proper precautions. We also ask that parents and children do not knock on our doors or windows since many of our teachers use this time to plan or attend meetings. If you need to speak with your child's teacher, please schedule a time to do so. Thank you for your understanding as we adjust to this new schedule.

Library Update

As students begin transitioning back to school, the Library will also begin transitioning from Remote Book Exchange to In-school Delivery and Book Return. Book Bundle menus (K-1 students...link is on Seesaw) and Destiny Holds (Grades 2-5) will still be due on Tuesdays by 3:30. Books will be delivered to students IN SCHOOL on Thursday for those grade levels that have returned to school. We will also pick up returned books in school. Remote students can still order books for remote pick-up. We will keep doing the Thursday pick-ups from 12-2 for the next few weeks while we work on a better plan for our remote learners.
