What's New In C2

October 30 - November 9

Literacy

Continuing these next few weeks, second graders will be learning how to identify and create compound words and adjectives. Also, we will continue to study the 5W’s. The 5W’s ask and answer such questions such as who, what, where, when, why and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

In addition, we will be learning about the significance of national holidays, including Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving Day, along with associated songs, legends, and short stories associated with these holidays.

We are working on our Dolch sight words in second grade. Your child has been assessed on these words and we will be learning the second grade list of words this year. Practice at home is always encouraged! If you are looking for some resources to work with your chiild on their sight words, check these out:

Math

We are have wrapped up learning about various addition strategies that help us add fluently through 20. We are now going into our unit on addition and subtraction with regrouping to 1000.

2.NBT.9 - I can explain why adding and subtracting strategies work using what I know about place value.

Upcoming standards:

2.NBT.5: I can add two-digit numbers.

2.NBT.7: Add and subtract within 1000 using concrete models or drawings and strategies

Nancy's Italian Ice on Wednesdays!

Starting next week, Pike Road will be selling Nancy's Italian Ice! We will have a favor of the week, and students must bring $2 on Tuesday to have one waiting for them on Wedesday afternoons at 2:00!

Thanksgiving Food Basket!

You may have already heard, Pike Road is collecting canned and boxed foods for those in need in our community! A group of our C5 learners has partnered with Woodland UMC for their Thanksgiving Food Drive. Our C5 service group has decided to make a fun competition of it - the community with the most donations will win a popsicle party!

Here's a letter written by our C5 group:

The canned food drive contest is a contest between grades to see which grade can get the most cans. The grade that collects the most cans (or boxed food) will win a popsicle party. The number of cans that each grade has donated will be shown on the chalkboard by the CLC. The boxes to collect the cans will be put under the can meter for each grade. The cans will be going to the Woodland United Methodist Church to be used in their food pantry. We would like to have all the cans by November 15. The C5 service group looks forward to your contributions. Thank you!
