GETTING STARTED
It all began when Ms. Ginni brought in the book, NOT A BOX, by Antoinette Portis. It is a classic story about the magic of cardboard boxes and a child’s imagination.
Probably everyone has had the experience of giving a child a present, only to see him/her get more pleasure out of the box. Often a child’s interest in a new toy lasts minutes, but interest in a good box can last a very l-o-n-g time. Who can resist the lure of a box?
It’s funny how a box can provide hours of amusement for young children in spite of all of the money spent on the latest and greatest toys (My baby boy is an example of this!). Use your imagination and an empty box to turn an ordinary afternoon into an adventure!
The children stood inside the box meanwhile Ms. Ginni and the rest of the class counted to see what the maximum capacity would be. This provided an opportunity to work with quantity and numerals and they decided whether or not there were too many children in the box.
Dramatic Play Corner
Why is this so important?
This Supermarket that we have in our classroom is a perfect example of high-quality, imaginative play. Not only are the girls and boys enjoying themselves, but their planning, role-playing, and verbal interaction are helping to build skills they will need for successful academic learning.
At Home you can help your child use props most effectively:
- Model how to use familiar objects in a pretend way. ("I can pretend that this cup is my microphone. What else could it be?")
- Introduce props such as boxes, old clothes, and containers.
- Provide a combination of props: some that are realistic, some theme-specific, and some that are left up to the child's ingenuity and imagination.
- Model how to make props for play using materials from around the house, such as paper, cardboard, yarn, and fabric scraps.
- Save items associated with specific settings that you have visited, including restaurants, the zoo, the post office, or your workplace.
