Cullman City Schools
The Week in Review - September 21, 2018
Building Patriotism
One of the most exciting events at WES is the yearly Veterans Program. An important and touching part of the program is the flag folding ceremony. Each year, students are selected to be on the flag team. This year's team is ready to begin preparing for this important job!
We are fortunate to have teachers who continue this powerful tradition at WES.
Congratulations to Our New Homecoming Queen!
Mary Kate Stanford (escorted by Blake Spradlin) was crowned our 2018 CHS Homecoming Queen. It was a wonderful night with the Bearcat Football Team coming out victorious over Columbia.
Board Game Day
Our Board Game Day initiative continues. We find that our students respond well to the opportunities provided to them during these times of play. We appreciate those who come to help us with this activity!
Differentiated Instruction
Small group instruction and learning stations are being implemented in Mr. Avery's Algebra Class at CHS.
Does the Greaser Fit the Stereotype?
After reading "The Outsiders" by S. E. Hinton, CMS students in Mrs. McGee's class used indirect characterization (STEAL method) to determine traits. They then drew the Greaser. Students wrote his true traits on the inside and stereotypes on the outside. A gallery walk followed by a quickwrite was completed to justify their reasoning!
Leadership in Action
West members of the Student Government Association met with Dr. Page to plan activities for our students. It is exciting to see these student leaders working for their school.
Gallery Walk
3rd graders at EES used the Gallery Walk instructional practice to actively engage and respond to questions and images. They had meaningful discussions that deepened their comprehension.
CMS SGA Planning Spirit Week Activities
SGA members met with Mr. Hill to plan Spirit Week 2018! Can't wait to see what is on the schedule.
Lunch and Learn
Mrs. Boyd and Mrs. Tuggle provide "Lunch Bites" for teachers. This gives our teachers an opportunity to have professional conversations along with a little fellowship.
Outdoor Classroom Provides Academic Opportunity
Students in Mrs. Smith's class are shown after collecting data from the weather station in the WES outdoor classroom. Their next step: analyzing the data.
Professional Learning for Reading Coaches
Reading Specialists from CCS joined with those from Cullman County to participate in an Alabama Reading Coaches Community last week! We are so pleased that these CCS ladies continually strive to better themselves and their professional abilities.
Try a Little Kindness
CMS students in Mrs. Walker's English class read, "Thank You Ma'am", by Langston Hughes. They shared acts of kindness they had performed and are encouraged to continue to perform acts of kindness. It is wonderful to have teachers incorporate culture and character education into their lessons!
Community Partners Provide Powerful Information
Thank you to Brooks’ Place, DHR, Cullman JPO and the DA’s Office for discussing Erin’s Law and the Jason Flatt Act with our CHS 9th Grade class.
Fact or Fiction?
These EES students worked collaboratively to identify similarities and differences in fiction and non-fiction text.
Technology in the Classroom
The phrase "technology in the classroom" takes on additional meaning when there is a personal touch. CCS Technology Coordinator, Michael Fowlkes, spent some time in direct instruction with students this week. According to Michael, "...to be honest, these kiddos didn’t need my help. They worked through the code.org modules with confidence and ease!"
Proud of our students and excited to have Michael as an instructional partner!
Developing Formative Assessments to Drive Instruction
CHS teachers spent some time with Aimee Bates this week creating formative assessments for our students.
