Set Design
Painter- The painter will design the elements under direction of the set designer
Electricians- Sets up the lights and technical parts of the set
Carpenter- Designs and builds the set under direction of the set designer
Working together- Set designers have to collaborate with all other designers and crew members of the stage crew.
I learned about the different parts of the set and how set designers work hard to create the sets for the stage. I learned about how the set designers consult with all the other de singers to create the set and the background for the play.
Set design is important for theatre because the set supports the actors, and helps exemplify the actors and what they are saying. A lot of work goes into building the set and it is a very fundamental part of any play.
Elements and Principles of Design
Shape- Self contained area which can be used in art and a positive shape always creates a negative shape
Size- Area occupied by a shape in relationship to the area around it
Texture- The surface quality of a shape, these can be physical or visual qualities
Value- Also known as tone, it is the Darkness or Lightness of a color
Contrast- Juxtaposition of opposing elements
Harmony- Similar or repeating elements in a work of art
I learned about how all the element s and principles are fundamental in creating a work of art. I learned about all the different elements and principles and how they were important in creating art.
The elements and principles of design are really important because they are the building blocks behind all of art. Any work of art you see will have almost all of these elements and they are fundamental to creating art.
Lighting Design
Texture-Lighting is very important for creating texture in Plays and helps flesh out the stage
Mood-Lighting helps set the tone of the play and does so by altering the mood with the lights
Intensity-Lighting helps certain things on the stage to stand out and be more visible in the audience's eyes
Movement-Lighting can make it look like things are moving on the stage when in actuality they are not.
I learned about how gels are very important to the lighting color and the different equipment that are fundamental in lighting design.
There are different types of lights in lighting design, some of them include
- Flood lights
- ERS (Ellipsodial Reflector Spotlight)
- Fresnel light
- Scoop Light
Lighting is important to the Theatre industry because it helps support the set piece and it exemplifies the characters and the set. It brings the set together without distracting from the actors.
Sound Design
Sound effects- Makes the play more realistic and more believable
Intensity- Intensity is the loudness of the sound, and can be used to invoke a certain feeling or for shock value
Reinforcements- Reinforcements make it easier to hear the actor and it makes them louder and clearer. It makes the play more enjoyable for the audience and supports the actors
Balance- Sound can be helpful to the actors or it can drown out their voices and be too distracting, finding the right balance is important for the success of the play.
I learned about how sound was very important to a play and is one of the most important elements of theatre. I learned about the different sound equipment in theatre and how they all play a part in bringing the sound to the audience in an enjoyable way.

- Sound Booth
- Microphones
- Amplifier
Sound is very important to the theatre industry because it helps invoke feelings in the audience and is very effective in getting the audience into the mood. It supports the actors and what they are saying without being distracting.

Eyeshadow- Can be used to convey a feeling about a character and can be used to portray a character's emotions
Pattern- Can be used on costumes to make a character stand out or to make the audience feel a certain way about a character
Lipstick- Can be used to exemplify a character's beauty or to make a character stand out
Fabric- Can be used to define a character's role and can determine a character's morality
I learned about how make up and costumes are incredibly important to a play. I learned about the different kinds of makeup that goes on an actor's face and I learned about the different kinds of materials that go into an actor's costume

Makeup and costumes are very important to theatre because they are what the actual actors have on. It's what the audience is looking at and it draws the audience's attention towards the actors and the message they are trying to get across.
