How our coastline works
What is Erosion
There are various types of erosion. The main types of erosion are Hydraulic action, attrition, abrasion and corrosion.
Hydraulic Action.
When air get tapped in the cracks in a rock it softens it and when a wave hits the rock it erodes.
Atrrition
Attrition occurs when a small rock is put in a small hole. After time the rock gets pushed around and around by the waves, this grinds the walls of the rocks eventually making it bigger an bigger.
Abrasion
Abrasion is when a rock is carried up the rocks scratching it.
Corrosion
Corrosion is like a rust on a rock. When salt and water dry up on the rock it changes the colour.
Long shore drift.
Is where the sand is carried by the waves down to one point on the beach making a large sand bank.
Constructive or Deconstructive.
A constructive beach is when the sand is carried up the beach building it up. A nonconstructive beach is is where the waves rip down the beach and pull the sand off the beach.
