Benton Weekly Update

Week 23: February 8-12, 2021

Lincoln, Love, and the Lunar New Year

We have a holiday Monday 2/8 honoring Lincoln's birthday, next week on 2/15 we honor Washington and all the Presidents with another holiday. Sunday this past week was notable not just for the Super Bowl, but because another sun design (the 13th so far!) created in Media Arts was featured on the CBS Sunday Morning TV show.

Look for mid-quarter progress reports this week along with information on scheduling parent conferences. Tutoring continues, the Chess Club starts up Tuesday, Leadership/ASB is sponsoring a Valentine Card Contest, PTSA has it's first dine-out fundraiser at Applebee's on Wednesday, the Lunar New Year starts on Friday, and Sunday is Valentine's Day.

Our Black History Month Artist/Performer is the Queen of Soul, the great Aretha Franklin. Click on the links for some videos of Aretha.

Aretha Franklin ~ Queen of Soul

To say that Aretha Franklin was one of the greatest American artists of all time is an understatement. Her multi-octave voice moved millions around the world during an unrivaled career that spanned six decades and garnered the singer-songwriter every achievement and honor imaginable. A gifted singer, pianist, songwriter, actress, and civil rights activist, Aretha began her career as a child singing gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, where her father C. L. Franklin was a minister.

She won 18 Grammy Awards, including the first eight awards given for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance (1968–1975). Franklin is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide. She was awarded the National Medal of Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1987, she became the first female performer to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She also was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2012. In 2010, Rolling Stone magazine ranked her number one on its list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time" and number nine on its list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". The Pulitzer Prize jury in 2019 awarded Franklin a posthumous special citation "for her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades". In 2020, she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.

Respect is one of her best known songs, and Chain of Fools, Jumpin' Jack Flash, and Think are some of my favorites.

Lunar New Year ~ February 12

2021 is the Year of the Ox. The Lunar New Year, most commonly associated with the Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, typically falls sometime between January 21 and February 20. Lunar New Year 2021 is on February 12, and in terms of the Chinese zodiac animal, it's the Year of the Ox.It's called the Lunar New Year because it marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendars traditional to many east Asian countries including China, South Korea, and Vietnam, which are regulated by the cycles of the moon and sun.

Spotlight on Learning ~ Media Arts

Have you ever seen the CBS Sunday Morning news magazine TV show? Its logo is a sun and each segment of the show closes with a different artwork of the sun. Media Arts teacher Allison McMath reached out to the CBS Sunday Morning show and asked if they would be interested in using some of her students' designs for a sun. They responded yes, and a few years later 13 Benton Media Arts students have had their works featured on this national TV show. Here's Abby Maldonado's, featured on the 2/7/21 episode.
