Lion's Pride
April/May 2019
Message from the Superintendent
Spring is a great time to be a Jessieville Lion! With all of the events happening in the district, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. Students are participating in baseball, softball, track, musicals, band concerts, testing, field trips, graduation, and many other activities.
Looking back at the year reminds me that there truly is NO PLACE LIKE JESSIEVILLE! It has been a great year, and I look forward to what the future holds for the district.
This will be the last newsletter for the 2018-2019 school year. I have enjoyed working on these newsletters and highlighting a few of the many wonderful things involving our students and staff. This year has been packed with events, accomplishments, awards, and memories. I hope that everyone has taken the opportunity to savor each of these throughout the year. The monthly Lion's Pride will start again in August.
Please make sure to view the Upcoming Events section of this newsletter for dates and activities. More information can be found on the district website and calendar.

Elementary Attendance Competition
A bulletin board in the elementary hallway tracks perfect attendance each day by classroom For every day that a class has perfect attendance for each student in the class, a paw is placed on the bulletin board. A quick glance tells observers which class is leading in attendance. The classroom who has the most days of perfect attendance receives $100 for Title I funds to purchase classroom instructional supplies.
Since the inception of the contest, Jessieville Elementary has seen an increase in the daily attendance rate for the school. The daily attendance rate for Feb. 2019 was 96.7%. Attendance rates are a component on the Arkansas ESSA School Index which calculates a letter grade for Arkansas schools. Not only are students and parents investing in students academic achievement by making sure students are in class every day, but they are also helping increase Jessieville Elementary School's ESSA School Index rating.

ALE Greenhouse Project
I had the pleasure of visiting with the staff and students of Synergy this week and see the work they have done with a greenhouse project. Dr. Smith wrote and received a grant to purchase a greenhouse kit. The older students leveled the area where the greenhouse would be located, put the greenhouse together, and worked with the younger students to start the seeds. As the seeds grew, the students transferred the young plants to larger containers. Students were responsible daily for tending the plants in the greenhouse.
The students were dealt a minor setback during one of our storms a few weeks ago and the greenhouse blew over. The students were able to restore it and save the plants. On April 23, they shared the plants - tomatoes, green beans, peppers, cilantro, carrots, cucumbers, squash, and various other plants - with the administration of Jessieville and Fountain Lake School Districts and members of the community. Talking to the students about the process and the things they had learned in doing the project was heartwarming. I appreciate the staff at Synergy for working with our students on this worthwhile project.
