St. Finnan's Catholic School
MARCH NEWSLETTER 2019
Principal's Message
Lent is a time when we prepare as a faith community to meet the risen Christ at Easter. It is a time for conversion, where we acknowledge and turn away from whatever keeps us from living the Gospel, a time to remind ourselves that we are called to live rooted in right relationship with God and neighbour. As we prepare to meet Christ in his resurrected glory, we pray for a change of heart towards greater love of God and neighbour; we fast from self-indulgence and indifference to the poor and suffering; and finally, we share our food, our wealth and our time with others in need.
During this Lenten season, may the Holy Spirit give us the strength to act justly, the courage to love tenderly and the faith to walk humbly with our God that we might rejoice in the triumph of God’s justice in Jesus at Easter.
Here are a few tips for families to celebrate Lent with their children:
1. Pray as a family: Read passages from the Bible together or prey a decade of the rosary.
2. A prayer jar: In this jar write down names of 40 different people each on separate pieces of paper whom you would like to focus that day to pray for. This is a great way for children to learn to not always pray for things they want but to open up and see that they can pray for others
3. Gratitude journal: Write down or drop pictures of what the children are thankful for throughout each day of Lent
4. Give spare change to local charities
5. Clean house- donate one thing a day for 40 days.
Wishing all the students and their family, a well-deserved mid-winter break as well as a lovely Easter.

Homemade wax crayons to give back!
In thinking of the Pope's Mercy Friday, the Junior-Intermediate MEP students will be selling homemade crayons every Friday during Lent. The crayons will be made into different shapes using recycled wax crayon pieces.
Each crayon will be sold for .50 cents each on Friday, March 22, 29 and April 5 and 12th. All profits will be donated to our local Community Living Agency, which every morning for over 15 years, has been in our school preparing breakfast and snack trays for each classroom.
Thank you for your time and dedication to our students!
From your Catholic School Council
Hello Parents and Guardians,
A great big Thank You in advance to all the parent volunteers and staff for your commitment to come in and prepare, make and serve as well as clean up after Shrove Tuesday Pancake Day. Your work and your time are greatly appreciated.
After our February meeting, we are excited to announce that $10.00 will be going towards each child for our end of the year trip. This has been made possible by everyone who helps St. Finnan’s fundraiser activities. With your support and dedication, we have been able to achieve so much this school year.
Our next meeting will be held on April 1st, 2019 @ 6:00pm in the school's library. We welcome anyone who wishes to join to please do so.

Laying the Foundation for an Active Life
As a parent, you know that reading with your children will not only provide hours of fun, but also help your children learn to read on their own. As they practice reading, they gradually develop the skills required to grow into literate adults.
The process to ensure your children grow into physically active adults is much the same. From the moment you start playing with them as babies, you’re helping them develop the skills they need to lead a healthy and active life. Along with the confidence to try new physical activities, and their love of movement, these new skills make up a child’s physical literacy.
So, the message is clear: simply have fun with your children! Whether it’s through tummy time with them as babies, running around with them as toddlers, or signing them up for organized sports when they’re older, it’s never too early to instill the love of physical activity in your children.
Looking for activities you can do with your children? The Active for Life website (www.activeforlife.com) provides parents and educators with a variety of resources and activities for children up to age 12.
