A Message from Mrs. Kaufmann

The faculty and staff at Funkstown School hope you had a very merry and relaxing holiday season! The children have settled back into the routine of school very quickly. It’s hard to believe but we are coming to the end of the second marking period, the half-way point in the school year. The marking period will end on January 15th and Kindergarten students will receive report cards soon after. Our students are making tremendous gains and you will begin to see even more growth in the next five months of school. Remember to continue daily reading and discussion of books with your child. This will help to develop strong vocabulary skills and a love of reading.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Friday, January 15th there will be no school for Prekindergarten students, and Kindergarten students will be dismissed 2 1/2 hours early, at 12:15 PM. Teachers will use the day for grading, to go over student assessments, and plan for the third marking period. Schools will be closed for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 18th, and for a teacher professional learning day on Tuesday, January 19th. Please contact your child’s teacher or the office if you have any questions.

We are looking forward to the second half of the school year and we invite you to volunteer or visit your child’s classroom at anytime. There will be many more exciting events in the next five months, and we hope you will be able to join us. I personally want to wish you and your family health, happiness and success 2016!

LITTLE FREE LIBRARY AT FUNKSTOWN SCHOOL

Funkstown's Little Free Library has been getting lots of use since we installed it in the Fall. Be sure to stop by any time you are at school, whether you're visiting inside, or dropping off or picking up your child. The books, which are collected and donated to Funkstown School every year, are yours to keep for a day, or to keep forever. New books have been loaded up, so stop on by any time and give them a look!

WEATHER RELATED SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND DELAYS

Winter is here!! When a two-hour weather delay has been announced for Washington County Public Schools there is NO AM or PM prekindergarten. If school is dismissed two hours early, the AM prekindergarten students who ride a bus to and from school will stay until the early dismissal time to ride the bus home with kindergarten students. Prekindergarten car riders will be dismissed at the regular AM Pre-K dismissal time of 10:45. There will be no PM prekindergarten when there is an early dismissal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please make childcare arrangements well in advance of weather related closings, and be sure your child knows where he/she is to go if school is dismissed early. In the event of weather related closings, the following procedures will be followed:

Final determination of school closing is normally made by 5:30 AM with media notification and posting of information before 6:00 AM. Depending on specific conditions, the timeline may vary. Parents and staff are urged to monitor several sources of information to gain updates as quickly as possible.

The following notification outlets about school closings or delays can be used to get information quickly. In case of a break-down in the communication plan due to power outages or other technical difficulties, parents and staff should be familiar with more than one of the following:

TIPS FOR GETTING TO SCHOOL ON TIME!

Getting up early, especially in the dark of winter, can be challenging for children as well as grown-ups. Here are a few points to consider that will help to develop responsibility and independence; and may help your family have smooth, pleasant school mornings.

  • Never leave it to the last minute! Do homework, sign folder, and have your child help pack the backpack and lunchbox the night before.
  • Choose clothing the night before! Have your child help to decide what they will wear and lay it out on the dresser. Let them dress as independently as possible the next morning!
  • Don’t let dawdlers control you! Make a list with simple picture cues of what children need to remember to do in the morning (get dressed, eat breakfast, comb hair, brush teeth) and make a game of “checking off” each item. You could even set a timer and try to “beat the clock”! Kids love a challenge!
  • Show your appreciation for responsible children! Reward your children for their good morning routines with special notes or treats in their lunch box, an extra hug, hot chocolate with marshmallows, renting a children’s movie on Friday night, or playing a board game.
  • Sing while you get ready! Sing favorite songs or recite nursery rhymes while you get ready for school. It’s hard to sing without a smile!

DECEMBER HOLIDAY SING-A-LONG

The month of December brought with it many joyful times at Funkstown School. Teachers and students found themselves busy with all kinds of fun and educational activities. On the last day before the winter break, Mrs. Moyer, our fantastic music teacher, led the students and staff in a holiday sing-a-long. Below are some pictures of the children enjoying a chance to unwind with music.
