GUIDELINES FOR KEEPING SICK CHILDREN HOME FROM SCHOOL
A sick child who is unable to participate in school in a meaningful way should be kept home to rest and recover until symptoms resolve. Keeping a sick child home also protects other children, school staff, and visiting community members from contracting an illness that can be spread from person to person.
Please be aware of the following guidelines for school attendance.
- Fever: A child must remain home with a fever equal to or > 100° F and may only return after he/she has been fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin.
- Diarrhea/Vomiting: A child with diarrhea and/or vomiting must stay at home and may return to school only after being symptom-free for 24 hours.
- Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Following a diagnosis of pink eye, a child may return to school 24 hours after the first dose of prescribed medication has been administered.
- Rashes: Common infectious diseases with rashes are most contagious in the early stages. A child with a suspicious rash must stay at home and may return to school after a health care provider has made a diagnosis and authorized the child's return to school in writing or symptoms have resolved completely.
- Head lice (pediculosis): Students who have an active case of live lice may attend school only after treatment which eliminates all live lice. Head lice do not jump or fly and are most commonly contracted by head-to-head touch. Head lice are common in school-aged children, so parents should routinely monitor children for live lice and teach the avoidance of behaviors that spread lice.
If you take your child to a healthcare provider for an evaluation of illness or injury, please be sure to request a written letter stating when your child may return to school and any accommodations required upon his/her return.
A healthy school community requires parents and schools to partner with each other. To prevent/minimize local outbreaks of contagious disease, parents must keep children who have an illness that can be spread from person to person at home, and CFISD school nurses will exclude students with symptoms of a communicable illness from school attendance.
COUNSELOR CORNER
School Pride:
Working Together Toward a Common Goal
“Individually, we are one drop, but together we are an ocean.” –Ryunosuki Satoro.
Welcome back, Huskies! We are Ms. Escareno and Ms. Meek, your Holmsley Elementary School Counselors. We are looking forward to meeting our newest Huskies!
The School Counselors are available for:
- · Individual Counseling
- · Small Group Counseling
- · Classroom Guidance and Social Emotional Lessons
- · Referral to community resources
Small Group Counseling
Throughout the year, we teach skills and strategies in small group settings, allowing students to share ideas and offer support through discussion and activities. Groups include skill-based (social/friendship, study skills, emotion, identification/regulation) and social emotional support. Groups are preventative and developmental. Please let us know if you are interested in a small group for your child.
Classroom Guidance
Classroom lesson topics address academics, career, and social-emotional skills. These lessons are aligned with state and national standards. During the month of September, we will introduce ourselves to students in our Meet the Counselor Lesson. We will follow that lesson up our We CARE lesson that teaches students about compassion and awareness.
September's Bringing out the Best character focus is being Concerned for the Common Good. For more information, click here.
HAPPY HEALTHY KIDS TIP:
Prepare children to transition back to school by having frequent, open conversations about it. Answer their questions, set expectations, and be excited together. To ease students’ back to school worries, offer them a sense of control: allow him/her to pick out her own clothes, pack his/her own lunch, or pick out special school supplies.

Tardies
The school day begins promptly at 8:45 a.m. Students who are not in the building at this time are considered tardy and will be asked to report to the office for an Admit to Class slip. All tardies are considered unexcused after 8:45 am unless a doctor’s note is provided.
When Your Child is Absent
When your child is absent, it is not necessary at the elementary level to call the school to report the absence. Calling will not excuse your child’s absence. You can send a note with the student. Please include the student’s first name, last name, and homeroom teacher on the excuse note.
Under the Mandatory Attendance Law, the state requires a court warning for excessive absences. Any excuse received after three days is considered unexcused and could result in a court warning. Remember to always send an excuse note with your child within three days when they return to school, explaining the reason for the absence. If your child is sent home by the nurse and is absent any following days, we will need a note to excuse those absences.
Moving? Withdrawing Your Child from School?
Please notify Ms. Valderrama in the attendance office 24-48 hours before withdrawing your child from school. The withdrawal process goes much faster and smoother with the extra notification. This extra time allows Ms. Valderrama to notify teachers, the librarian, get materials together, etc. A consent form will need to be signed by the parent or legal guardian. You will need these papers to register at the new school.
Thank you!
