Spring Lake Park Schools Families:
Last evening, the Spring Lake Park School board reviewed the 2020-2021 School Year Plan and approved the recommendation that we begin the 2020-2021 school year in a Modified Campus Schedule (Hybrid) model and provide full-time distance learning for those who choose it.
Part of this plan includes pushing back the first day of school to Thursday, September 10, 2020. Teaching staff return on August 31 and this change provides two additional days of professional learning and planning necessary to support their work with your children. Days of instruction scheduled for September 8 and 9, 2020 will be replaced on December 4, 2020 and February 11, 2021.
We are grateful to have heard from more than 70 percent of our families over the last week. At this point, 66 percent of those responding will begin the year in the hybrid model and 34 percent will be doing full-time distance learning; With this information, we have been able to refine our Modified Campus Schedule (hybrid) plan. In brief:
- Students in grades K-1 will come to school five days a week to learn in groups no larger than 15 students (see the plan for more details)
- Students in grades 2-12 will have 2 days of learning at school and 3 days of learning at home. Students will be split into two groups – an A group (last name A-L) and a B group (last names M-Z) will attend on alternating schedules. A group will be at school Mondays and Thursdays, B group will be at school Tuesdays and Fridays. Wednesdays will be at home learning days. See the updated calendar.
Students who begin the year in the Modified Campus Schedule (Hybrid) Model will be able to transition to full-time distance learning at any time if they choose.
I invite families to review much more detail in the plan. This information has also been updated at SpringLakeParkSchools.org/Plan2020 where language translation services are available. In addition, on the website you will find Frequently Asked Questions and evolving information and resources for the school year. Please use it as your information source.
Your next step, by Wednesday, August 12
With this next level of detail about the 2020-2021 school year, by the end of the day Wednesday, August 12, we are asking families to:
- Complete the survey (if you haven’t already) indicating your choices (for learning model and transportation) for the beginning of the school year. The survey will remain open through Wednesday. After Wednesday, we will assume any students we haven’t heard from will be coming to school in the hybrid model.
- Submit any changes to choices you have already made by emailing communications@district16.org.
Look for more information from your student’s school after August 19 when they will begin sharing additional details at the school level. Thank you, once again, for your patience, understanding and support as we prepare for an unusual start to the school year. Working together, we will move learning forward and keep everyone in our schools safe and healthy.
