Family Newsletter

March 10, 2022

Dear Erickson Families,

The 5th grade students completed their service project and raised over $1,100 toward the Mayfield School District in Kentucky who were devastated by the tornadoes in December. I am so proud of their dedication toward helping others in need. Please see some of the service project pictures below.

PAINT NIGHT is tonight if you signed up! I am looking forward to seeing so many artists tonight. Over 200 kids/parents will be attending tonight over the 2 sessions. Please check in at your designated time in the front lobby. If you are a painter, please choose a seat facing the screen on the stage so you can view Mrs. Clay, art teacher, leading the painting. There is no bad seat in the house as her painting will be projected!

PTO needs your help! PTO is in need of hot lunch volunteers from 11:20-12:50 on Monday and Fridays. The Hot Lunch Program is run by parent volunteers. To continue this program, we need volunteers! Only 2 people have signed up for Friday. Sign up TODAY using this FORM. Your children LOVE seeing you at hot lunch!

My last pitch for parents to take the 5Essentials Survey that collects feedback from our students, teachers, and parents. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will give you the opportunity to share your thoughts on important elements of school effectiveness. To take the survey, please visit and select the appropriate survey. Right now the school has a parent participation rate of 7%. We need 20% to receive feedback. Last day is March 11th to provide your feedback!

Tomorrow, Friday, is SPIRIT DAY...wear BLUE & GOLD! PTO will also be providing each student with a donut (standard donut with frosting) on Friday. If you do not want your child to have a donut, please let me or the classroom teacher know. THANK YOU PTO!

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions, comments, or feedback. The best way to reach me would be via email or phone: or 630-529-2223.

Have a wonderful week!

Stacy Johnston

FROM THE NURSE: Vision and Hearing Screening

Dupage County Health Department will be conducting vision and hearing screening for students at Erickson on March 10. Certified hearing and vision screening technicians will be providing screenings as mandated by the state in search for any vision or hearing deficiencies. In the event that deficiencies are detected in either area, The DuPage County Health Department Vision and Hearing team will return on March 24th to rescreen any students that did not meet passing criteria during the first screening.

They will be screening the following:

Vision: preK, K, 2

Hearing: preK, K, 1, 2, 3

Students in special education

Students in foster care

Students new to Bloomingdale SD13 this year

As of today, the Dupage County Health Department's policy requires students who are receiving the screening from Dupage screening technicians to wear masks. If you could pack a mask for students to wear for a few minutes on this day, that would be appreciated.

"Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor".

5Essentials Survey: Please Consider Participating!

Bloomingdale SD13 participates in the annual Illinois 5Essentials Survey that collects feedback from our students, teachers, and parents. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will give you the opportunity to share your thoughts on important elements of school effectiveness. The responses will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide our improvement efforts. All responses are confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.

The Parent Survey is currently open and will remain so through March 11, 2022. To take the survey, please visit and select the appropriate survey.

All Bloomingdale SD13 teachers, as well as students in 4th - 8th grade, are being asked to complete this survey. 5Essentials Reports will be generated for schools if their teachers and/or students meet the response rate threshold of 50 percent. Teachers will work with students to assist them with logging in and taking the student survey.

On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:

  • Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environments
  • Ambitious Instruction

We value your feedback and appreciate you taking the time to provide us with your input.
