Mental Health Awareness Week at OLMP
This week, OLMP students and staff have been celebrating Mental Health Awareness Week. The leadership students lead by Jenna Worton and Tammy Richard, Mental Health Promotion Facilitator with Alberta Health Services, developed a week of activities covered during TAG Homeroom time with the aim to educate students and staff on mental health, mental illness, ways to cope with stress and strategies to enhance our well-being. A list of helping resources in our school and community were provided for those who needed to speak further with someone. See links below.
Parents, you too can help promote positive mental health by following these suggestions:
Focus on your child’s strengths. Talk first about what they did well instead of focusing on the mistakes. Then ask them what they think they could do to improve.
Ask and really listen to your child. Asking your child how they feel and listening to their feelings are important ways to build trust.
Do and say things the same way you want your child to. Your emotions affect what you do and say and they affect your child too. For example, if you are angry, what you say and do is important to your relationship and to how your child learns to express angry. So try taking deep breaths for a minute to calm yourself. Then problem solve with your child. Think about how you speak to your child and talk about the behavior you want to see.
Apologize when you’re wrong. Parents need to apologize to their child when they make a mistake. Sincere and simple apologies build trust and show respect for your child’s feelings.
Give your child choices and respect their wishes. If your child has a chance to make choices they develop a feeling of having control, building self-esteem, learning how to solve problems and learning to take responsibility for their choices.
Ask questions that help your child solve problems on their own. When parents hear their child has a problem, it’s tempting to take over and solve it. Try asking questions that will help them solve their own problems such as: “What do you think you can do about this?”
Encourage sharing and helping. You can give your child tasks that are appropriate for their age, such as feeding the family pet, shoveling the sidewalks, washing the dishes, helping a neighbor, etc.. This builds self-confidence and teaches your child what they do can make a difference in the lives of others.
Read books and stories together. Even if your child already reads they love reading stories out loud. Take turns reading out loud or talk to your child about what they like to read.

Community Blanket Exercise
Why is Indigenous (First Nation, Metis, & Inuit) content being infused into my child's schooling? In order to understand why this is happening an important first step that people can take is participating in a blanket exercise.
OLMP Parent/School Council would like to invite all EICS parents and community members..............
The Blanket Exercise is based on participatory popular education methodology and the goal is to build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. This history is one most of us have not learned going through the existing K-12 Alberta Curriculum.
Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy.
The Indigenous rights history we've never been taught. Want to know more? Join us at OLMP.
When: March 19, 2019 @ 6:30pm
Where: Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School Gym
Other important info: Participants are encouraged to bring their own blankets (though this isn't mandatory). Snacks and refreshments will be provided before and after. Doors open at 6:15. The activity varies in length (minimally 1 1/2 hours) depending on participants, but will not go longer than 9:00pm.
If you are interested in joining us for this experience please contact Mrs. Kristy Smith by email kristys@eics.ab.ca or call OLMP 780-672-2975 or RSVP below to sign up.

Book Recommendation
Book Recommended: Night
Author: Elie Wiesel
Recommended by: Mr. Enright (OLMP teacher)
Book Description: A memoir describing Elie Wiesel's experience at Auschwitz. Starting when the author is 12 years old, the memoir depicts Elie's struggle for survival and maintaining his faith in the face of horrific atrocities towards his fellow man.
Why it is recommended: A recent study suggests that 1 in 5 adolescents do not know what the Holocaust is. This is staggering and alarming. This is a book I teach at the 30-1 level. Instead of an account by account report, Elie describes the horrors of the Holocaust both physically and psychologically. In the end, the book examines the dangers of an apathetic and indifferent world; a themes that are pertinent today.
