The Owl Times

The Parent Newsletter for Oak Hills Terrace Elementary

September/October 2019

From Principal Robinson's Desk

It's been a pleasure getting to know everyone these last few weeks. OHT is truly the place to be! We have some of the hardest working teachers I've ever met, the parents and family are so supportive, and our students are incredible! It's going the be the best year ever!

Each year schools in our district are given the task of developing a campus improvement plan (CIP). Our CIP helps to drive initiatives on campus that will help our students be successful. In the CIP we identify performance objectives which become our school goals for the year. We have identified five goals for our campus this year. They revolve around discipline, teacher planning for quality instruction, writing, math and reading. Within the math goal we are placing a heavy focus on mastering basic math facts. This is the foundation for all other math, and is an important skill students will use for the rest of their lives. Our reading goal is to have students reading at or above grade level by the end of the year. You will start to see homework come home that will address both of these areas. You can help your child at home by making sure they practice their math facts and read as much as possible.

Another area of focus for OHT this year is attendance. We can't help our students be successful if they aren't in school. It is so important that students are at school everyday and on time. Our first bell rings at 7:40 a.m. Our goal is to achieve 95% or more of our students in school everyday. We know that there are times when students are ill, and we definitely want you to keep them home at those times so we don't spread illness, but if they are healthy, please send them to school. There is so much instruction lost with every absence, and it is hard for students to catch up. Be on the lookout soon for some attendance incentives that we know our students will love! We really appreciate your support in helping your child maintain great attendance!

Parent Drop Off and Pick Up

Our front loop is reserved for parent drop off and pick up. As you are driving through the front loop please be very careful and drive slowly so that we do not hit any students or parents that may be crossing. Our drop off starts as early at 6:45 a.m. The best time to drop off to avoid traffic is between 6:45 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. At 7:30 a.m. the traffic becomes heavier and you are more likely to have to wait in line.

Afternoon pickup can also be a little hectic, so please be patient as you come through the loop. Our youngest students come out to the loop a little earlier than the rest of the campus to help alleviate some of the traffic. So, if you have a PreK, Kinder or 1st grade student, then you want to get here early. If you have a 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade student, you might want to wait until 3 p.m. to come up. We keep students out front until 3:10. At 3:10 we bring them into the office to wait for a parent to sign them out.

We have a wonderful cafeteria crew led by Ms. Sarah Gloria. If you ever have any questions regarding breakfast or lunch, Ms. Gloria is more than willing to help. Breakfast starts at 6:45 a.m. All students receive a free breakfast and lunch at Oak Hills Terrace because we are part of a federal program that provides this opportunity. The only time you would ever need to provide your child with money for the cafeteria is if you would like for them to have snacks. The breakfast and lunch menu went home at the beginning of the year, but if you would like to access that information online you can click here or visit and go to our child nutrition department.

Security Lobby Construction

Oak Hills Terrace Elementary is next to get a security lobby! By the end of this year all 79 elementary schools in NISD will have security lobbies with specially designed glass. Visitors will have to stop at our front lobby window to identify themselves with a photo ID and will be buzzed into the building once they have provided proper identification.

Construction of our security lobby is set to take place starting October 1st and will run through Christmas Break. During this time, we will reroute all foot traffic to the office through our front gates by the courtyard. A temporary security fence with gates will be constructed closer to the cafeteria to provide protection for our students and staff throughout the construction process.

We plan to have plenty of signage at the front of the school to help direct students, parents and visitors. If you have any questions about this project, please feel free to stop by the office.

One of our campus improvement plan goals is to decrease discipline referrals and promote positive behavior across the campus. A tool that we are using to help us acheive this goal is Class Dojo. Every classroom teacher has entered their students into the Oak Hills Terrace Class Dojo. Students earn dojo points for various positive actions. They can receive dojo points from their teachers and other staff members, including Principal Robinson or Vice Principal Wagner. As parents, you have been invited to join the Class Dojo for your child's classroom. You will be able to see how many points they have achieved. You will also have access to class announcements and school wide announcements. If you haven't had a chance to join Class Dojo yet, please do! It's proving to be a valuable communication tool between our school and parents.

Raptor System

Our Raptor System is the check in system at the front office. Whenever someone comes to visit on our campus they must have their driver’s license or state ID scanned and a visitor pass printed out. You must present your ID each time you visit. You must also present your ID when checking out your child to leave early for the day. We appreciate your cooperation in this process. The safety of our students is our number one priority.

We love partnering with parents in the education of their children. As a volunteer you can help our school community make OHT the best it can be. Opportunities to volunteer will come up throughout the year. Our most recent need for volunteers will be our upcoming Bike Rodeo on October 2nd. Every year parents and community members must do an updated background check prior to volunteering, chaperoning a field trip, or becoming part of the PTA board.

An online version of the background check is available on the NISD homepage. You can click here to access the background check application or go to, scroll to the bottom and click the Volunteers and Affiliates link. Complete the requested information on the application and select submit. If you are unable to access the internet, you can come by the OHT library to complete the application using our computers. We usually get the information back within a week. We only see the volunteers name and the word "cleared". If someone is not cleared, they will receive notification from our HR department. The school doesn't get that information.

Join PTA

We have an amazing PTA this year. There are several things they already have planned for our students this year. If you haven't had a chance to join PTA, please do! It's $7.00, and that money goes to help with programs, field trips and items for our students and teachers. You can return the money in an envelope or go online to to join. Choose Northside ISD as the school district and then Oak Hills Terrace Elementary.

The first event our PTA has planned is our Annual PTA Trunk or Treat! This will take place on Friday, October 25th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. We are currently accepting donations of candy. The class with the most donations will win a pizza party!

Bike Rodeo

Our Bike Rodeo is October 2nd. This year we will have a tailgating event the evening before so you may bring your child's bike up. They can practice on the front loop and you will be able to leave your child's bike where we will lock it in a safe area to be ready for the Bike Rodeo the next day. We will have music, snacks and water. The Bike Rodeo will take place during grade level rotations. Here is the schedule:

3rd Grade 8:15

Kinder 9:10

1st Grade 10:00

4th Grade 11:25

2nd Grade 12:15

5th Grade 1:55

We are still looking for volunteers. If you have filled out your background check and are willing to volunteer, please email Coach Felux at
