The Owl Times
The Parent Newsletter for Oak Hills Terrace Elementary
From Principal Robinson's Desk
Each year schools in our district are given the task of developing a campus improvement plan (CIP). Our CIP helps to drive initiatives on campus that will help our students be successful. In the CIP we identify performance objectives which become our school goals for the year. We have identified five goals for our campus this year. They revolve around discipline, teacher planning for quality instruction, writing, math and reading. Within the math goal we are placing a heavy focus on mastering basic math facts. This is the foundation for all other math, and is an important skill students will use for the rest of their lives. Our reading goal is to have students reading at or above grade level by the end of the year. You will start to see homework come home that will address both of these areas. You can help your child at home by making sure they practice their math facts and read as much as possible.
Another area of focus for OHT this year is attendance. We can't help our students be successful if they aren't in school. It is so important that students are at school everyday and on time. Our first bell rings at 7:40 a.m. Our goal is to achieve 95% or more of our students in school everyday. We know that there are times when students are ill, and we definitely want you to keep them home at those times so we don't spread illness, but if they are healthy, please send them to school. There is so much instruction lost with every absence, and it is hard for students to catch up. Be on the lookout soon for some attendance incentives that we know our students will love! We really appreciate your support in helping your child maintain great attendance!
Parent Drop Off and Pick Up
Afternoon pickup can also be a little hectic, so please be patient as you come through the loop. Our youngest students come out to the loop a little earlier than the rest of the campus to help alleviate some of the traffic. So, if you have a PreK, Kinder or 1st grade student, then you want to get here early. If you have a 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade student, you might want to wait until 3 p.m. to come up. We keep students out front until 3:10. At 3:10 we bring them into the office to wait for a parent to sign them out.
Cafeteria
Security Lobby Construction
Construction of our security lobby is set to take place starting October 1st and will run through Christmas Break. During this time, we will reroute all foot traffic to the office through our front gates by the courtyard. A temporary security fence with gates will be constructed closer to the cafeteria to provide protection for our students and staff throughout the construction process.
We plan to have plenty of signage at the front of the school to help direct students, parents and visitors. If you have any questions about this project, please feel free to stop by the office.

Volunteers
An online version of the background check is available on the NISD homepage. You can click here to access the background check application or go to www.nisd.net, scroll to the bottom and click the Volunteers and Affiliates link. Complete the requested information on the application and select submit. If you are unable to access the internet, you can come by the OHT library to complete the application using our computers. We usually get the information back within a week. We only see the volunteers name and the word "cleared". If someone is not cleared, they will receive notification from our HR department. The school doesn't get that information.

The first event our PTA has planned is our Annual PTA Trunk or Treat! This will take place on Friday, October 25th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. We are currently accepting donations of candy. The class with the most donations will win a pizza party!
