# Welcome to the Dark Side

## Background

Problem: Will pillbugs be more attracted to light or dark colored paper?

Hypothesis: If pillbugs are more attracted to dark colored paper then they will move from the light colored paper to the dark colored paper because in nature, they are found under rocks and dark spaces.

Null Hypothesis: The pillbugs will not show a preference in choosing colored paper. They will be equally distributed in the petri dishes (5 and 5).

Variables: The manipulated variable for the experiment will be changing the brightness of the paper (light=green, dark=black).

Control: In the experiment, the type of insect will remain the same as well as the temperature and humidity of the environment.

## Materials

2 Petri Dishes

Green Paper

Black Paper

10 Pill-bugs

Timer

Tweezers (optional)

## Procedure

Control Procedure:

1. Place 5 pill-bugs into each empty petri dish using tweezers. Place timer at 10 minutes.

2. During each minute interval, observe and record data based on findings.

Manipulated Variable Procedure:

1. After the control procedure is finished, take the pill-bugs out of the petri dishes.

2. Cut green paper into the size of the petri dish. Place inside of petri dish. Repeat with black paper into other petri dish.

3. Place 5 pill-bugs into each petri dish using tweezers. Place timer at 10 minutes.

4. During each minute interval, observe and record data based on findings.

## Data

The results below are shown from minute intervals in a 10-minute time period.
Chi-Squared Results: P = .324

## Analysis

After conducting a chi-squared test, we failed to reject the null hypothesis. This shows that the trend we saw in our data was simply due to randomness. Because the sum of the chi-squared problems was less than the comparative number in the distribution table, our results were not clear enough to prove whether or not pill-bugs have a preference in colored paper.

## Conclusion

Despite the pill-bugs showing a slight preference to the light green paper, after performing data analysis and a chi-squared test, we came to the conclusion that it was simply due to randomness. Our overall experiment proved that pill-bugs do not have a clear preference to one paper or the other.
