Supporting Students To Be Independent and Motivated
Before our kids can reach Independence we must first conquer stages of dependence.
Break it down: Think of a toddler getting dressed in the morning. At first, he/she needs all of your attention and help to get their clothes on "properly or matching". Eventually, their fine motor skills develop and they may even have a sense of urgency to get dressed quicker than you can help them. Now, there may be times in later years where some clothes are trickier to get on or off and our kids will seek our help again.
Think of this throughout or digital learning journey. School work may take a little time to get going and there may be a lot of questions as we continue new learning. Remember, we have a great group of teachers who are here to help. Reach out with questions. We recognize how great you are doing as parents and teachers. Keep it up and remember you are not alone!
Strategies Worth Trying
- Find out what motivates them (preferred activities, 1:1 time, breaks, outside time)
- Make rewards attainable and have checkpoints
- Provide variety and choices (make sure you can stay true to all choices)
- Use a visual completion chart
- Model how you want it done /expectations
- Make a game or challenge of it
Tips for Follow Through and Success
- Make expectations predictable
- Give praise for effort and completion
- Encourage to ask specific questions (change "I don't get it" into, "I'm not understanding what the directions of this assignment is.")
- Have patience
- Be willing to compromise/ avoid power struggles
- Stay Consistent
- Forget perfection

Event Information
Monday Morning Virtual Coffee with the Counselor Anyone?
Any moms or dads out there feeling like they could use a gathering? I'm happy to create a "safe meet" and a listening ear to anyone wanting to talk over a cup of coffee.
I miss people and I'd love to hear any "safer at home" stories. Good, bad or ugly :)
