Book of the Week: Cheesie Mack Is Not a Genius or Anything by Steve Cotler
Cheesie Mack Is Not a Genius or Anything basically takes place during the span of just a few days—all of them revolving around Cheesie’s fifth grade graduation. (Cheesie’s real name is Ronald, by the way.) This book is Cheesie’s account of everything that happened in this short—but action-packed—span of time. He recounts events that involve mice, BLART sandwiches, old pennies, haunted houses, his best friend Georgie, and his horrible sister Goon (June to everyone else). Peppered throughout the book are interesting facts, words, and side notes that may or may not have anything to do with the story. Cheesie is a character that a lot of kids will relate to, and they may just learn a little along the way.
This book is a great one for any reader who, well, just likes knowing stuff. Cheesie researches things he doesn’t know a lot about, and he shares what he finds with the reader. Cheesie is very interested in words and their meanings, and he even makes up his own words. (This might be a great book for educators to use when teaching lessons on voice, word choice, and using vibrant language.) There’s even a website that goes with this book, http://cheesiemack.com, that students will enjoy visiting while reading.
Cheesie Mack Is Not a Genius or Anything is perfect for readers who enjoy books like Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, Dan Gutman’s My Weird School Daze series, Jim Benton’s Dear Dumb Diary series, or Rachel Vail’s Justin Case: School, Drool, and Other Daily Disasters.
Cheesie Mack Is Not a Genius or Anything, written by Steve Cotler, is nominated for this year's South Carolina Children's Book Award.

PTA Short Term Clubs
Our PTA is looking for volunteers for our upcoming spring short term clubs that will take place each Wednesday for the month of March from 2:30-3:30. Club leaders are needed for chess, croquet, knitting, and basketball. Someone is also needed to lead a simple woodworking club. Home Depot will provide the materials, but a leader is needed. If you or someone you know could help with any of these clubs, please email firstname.lastname@example.org . Thank you for your help in providing these experiences for our students.
Black History Month
As an IB World School, we want to promote diversity, open-mindedness, and keep our kids thinking, researching, and inquiring. Our Social Studies Committee has come up with a plan to celebrate Black History Month. Teachers will send a link with questions, and they will also be available on the school website. Feel free to research the answers with your student. Students that provide a correct answer to any of the questions will be in the drawing for some fun-tastic prizes. Multiple names will be pulled each Friday during the month of February on the morning news! Good luck!
Pennies for Patients
Pennies for Patients starts February 4th and runs until February 28th. Students may bring in money to go towards the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The Beta Club will be selling Valentine Grams for 50 cents each February 11-13 during lunch. Valentine Grams will be a heart with a Valentine pencil. Students can write a message as well. Proceeds will go with to Pennies for Patients. Students can buy for other students or teachers. They will be delivered to classrooms on Valentine’s Day.
