Navigation Notes

Happy Sunday Westside Families! We would like to thank our amazing Substitutes and Volunteers who have supported our school and students this first month! Special Shout Out to: Mrs. Kiszkiel, Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Lies, Mrs. Francis, Mrs. Means, and Mrs. Smith for frequently subbing in our classrooms and providing consistent instruction! We would also like to recognize Mrs. Wise and Mrs. Thompson who have volunteered MANY hours to kick-off our PTO and volunteer initiatives thus far.

If you are interested in Substituting for Westside, please click HERE for requirements and next steps. We are also encouraging any parents/guardians to become Registered Volunteers by clicking HERE.

Our next PTO meeting will be Wednesday, Sept. 27th at 6:00pm here at the school. You do not have to be a registered volunteer to attend, so save the date to join us!

Interim Reports will be sent home and posted to FOCUS on September 15th for 1st-6th graders. If you have questions or concerns about your child's progress, please request a conference with their teacher. *Additionally, FSA score reports will be sent home with students who took these assessments last year*

As always, thank you for your support! Our office will be open Monday-Friday from 7:30AM-3:30PM. Please come on in if we can assist you in any way.

F.A.S.T. Testing Dates & Information

This month students in grades Pre K - 6th will be taking Progress Monitoring 1 of Florida's Assessment of Student Thinking (F.A.S.T.)

*UPDATED* Testing Dates:

Sept. 14th - 3rd – 6th (ELA)

Sept. 15th - 3rd – 6th (Math)

Please review the following policies with your student before testing:

  • Electronic Devices—Students are not permitted to have any electronic devices, including, but not limited to, cell phones, smartphones, smartwatches, and Bluetooth/wireless headphones/earbuds, at any time during testing or during breaks (e.g., restroom), even if the devices are turned off or students do not use them. If your student is found with an electronic device, his or her test will be invalidated.
  • Working Independently—Students are responsible for doing their own work during the test and for protecting their answers from being seen by others. If students are caught cheating during testing, their tests will be invalidated. In addition, FDOE employs Caveon Test Security to analyze student test results to detect unusually similar answer patterns. Student tests within a school that are found to have extremely similar answer patterns will be invalidated.
  • Leaving Campus—If your student leaves campus before completing a test session (e.g., for lunch, an appointment), he or she will not be allowed to return to that test session. If your student does not feel well on the day of testing, it may be best for him or her to wait and be tested on a make-up day. Please remember not to schedule appointments on testing days.
  • Testing Accommodations—If your student has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), a Section 504 plan, or is an English Language Learner (ELL) or a recently exited ELL, please contact the school to discuss the testing accommodations that will be provided for your student.

Lunch With Students

We had a great kick off to our Parent/Student Lunch Day last Friday! Thank you to the families who joined us and we look forward to seeing more of you this Friday.

At this time, we must follow the parameters listed below per BPS guidelines:

  • This opportunity will only be available on Fridays.

  • Only adults on the approved pick-up list for a child will be allowed to have lunch with students. You will need to present your photo ID at the front office and receive a visitor's tag. When done, you must sign out before leaving campus.

  • A designated area will be provided for the adult and student.

  • Adults will only be allowed to each lunch with THEIR child and we request only two adults per child please.

  • Adults who are not registered volunteers will be monitored by school staff at all times.

  • Adults will be permitted to be on campus for lunch for their child's 30-minute lunch block (times listed at end of newsletter for all classes). Once your child's lunch is over, we kindly as you to sign out and exit campus. If you have multiple children and want to have lunch with all of them, you must wait for additional lunch times in the front office, glass booth, or your vehicle.

  • You may bring in food from outside sources for your child only. Any leftover drinks or snacks will not be allowed back in class however.

Students Exploring Their Potential!

During Physical Education class this rotation, students were engaged in Fitness Fun activities that work on balance and flexibility. They are learning about ways to FUEL UP (make healthy food choices) AND PLAY 60 ( minutes every day-heart rate in Moderate-Vigorous zone)

Explorers and Staff celebrated Football Friday to kick off the season! Students played catch with Mr. Toenjes during breakfast, stopped by our photo booth, and stretched their brains during Football Trivia during lunch. We hope all our football players and cheerleaders had a great game this weekend! Some photos are below, but the rest are on our Facebook page :)
