Attendance Policies at ISWA
"It's hard to beat a person who never gives up" - Babe Ruth
We believe in YOU
Insight School of Washington recognizes that there is a direct relationship between good attendance and high achievement. Students with good attendance earn higher grades, enjoy school more, realize success, gain the necessary credits for graduation and learn positive habits that they will carry for a lifetime.
We see it as the responsibility of each parent, guardian, teacher, administrator and staff member to promote and stress the value of good attendance. It is also the responsibility of the staff to carry out all attendance policies in a fair, firm, consistent and timely manner.
As a Washington State school, ISWA monitors and records student attendance on a weekly basis. ISWA is required by state law to follow set procedures and take action to ensure students are attending school on a regular basis. ISWA will be implementing the following policies:
· Students are required to make two-way contact with one of their teachers every week
· Students must attend all required live classes through Blackboard Collaborate
· Students need to login to the Online High School system daily and complete course work in each of their courses
· Students are required to complete a Monthly Progress Conference with their homeroom teacher
Students are expected to spend 30 – 35 hours per week completing school work.Kelly Lindberg

YEAR LONG ATTENDANCE ACTIVITES AND CHALLENGES
Throughout the year, students will be able to participate in activities, challenges, and games that are geared toward attendance. By participating in these activities, students will be able to maintain good attendance, share their talents and interests, and take a break during a long school week.
What happens when a student receives unexcused absences?
We are required to notify parents and/or guardians of their student’s absences. We are also required to create and supply programs to encourage students to follow school policies. We will send out attendance notifications each week to the student and parent regarding student attendance for the week before.
Below are some required interventions in which students with unexcused absences may participate.
- Referral to the Family Academic Support Team for tiered level support. Students who do not engage with FAST may be referred to Graduation Alliance and/or withdrawn.
- Absenteeism Prevention Class with the Family Compliance Liaison.
- Assessment measuring personal risk and needs levels.
- Parent and student administrative meeting with Family Compliance Liaison.
- A student with 20 or more consecutive days of absences will be recommended for withdrawal from the school.
Excusing a Student's Absences
If a student is going to be absent from a class, please notify the content teacher as soon as possible. We do not excuse absences unless a student will be absent for 5 days or longer during the span of a school week. Since attendance is calculated on a weekly (rather than daily) basis, students are expected to engage over a span of 7 days.
If a student does have to be excused, these expectations must be followed:
- The legal parent/guardian must send their student’s name, school ID number, dates of absences, and reason for the excusal to the Attendance Clerk from their Learning Coach email account. If the parent/guardian is not the Learning Coach, it may be sent from their personal email.
- Students are NOT allowed to excuse their own absences.
- Documentation may be required in order to be excused (doctor’s note, letter from a court, etc.). Feel free to talk to the Attendance Clerk about what documentation you will need to provide, as well as any questions you may have.
