What is soil?
Soil is the outermost layer of the Earth's crust. It does many things for the Earth. Soil makes the Earth not as bare, it makes it interesting. Let's learn more about keep on reading!
How is soil formed?
Soil is formed by weathering rocks and it is made up of the five main particles shown below. Also the things that affect soil formation are shown below.
What are the 5 things that affect soil formation?
- Parent material-minerals forming the basis of soil
- Living organism- influencing soil formation
- Climate- affecting the rate of weathering and organic decomposition
- Topography- grade of slope affecting drainage, erosion and deposition
- Time-influence soil properties
What are the 5 major components of soil?
- mineral particles derived from rocks by weathering
- organic materials - humus from dead and decaying plant material
- water - in which nutrient elements are dissolved
- air - both carbon dioxide and oxygen
- living organisms including bacteria that help plant decomposition
What is soil texture?
The soil texture triangle tells various combinations of silt, clay and sand?
Sand -loose granular substance typically pale yellowish color.
silt- fine sand, clay, or other material carried by running water and deposited as a sediment.
clay- a stiff, sticky fine-grained earth, typically red color(in N.C.) forming a impermeable layer in the soil.
What is soil fertility?
Soil fertility- is the ability of soil suppling essential plant nutrients for plant growth and makes sure the soil didn't have any toxic substances.
