What's Up @ West
Summer Reading CafePerkiomen Valley School District believes it is critical for students to foster positive reading habits in order to develop as lifelong learners. The district's summer reading program exists to inspire a lifelong love of reading and to maintain and sharpen one's reading and thinking skills. Students in Stephanie O'Brien's seventh grade ELA classes shared their summer reading selections with their classmates during a Summer Reading Cafe activity. With soothing background music and table cloths on the desks, students cycled around the room sharing some highlights of their selections. | Learning StationsThe Need for Speed! Students in Mr. Patterson eighth grade science classes participated in an action packed lesson about speed. In small groups, students chose and performed three different forms of motion over a set distance. They conducted three trials for each mode and determined the average time it took to cover the distance. Then they computed the velocity of each mode using the formula Velocity = Distance/Time to determine which mode resulted in the greatest velocity. | Forms of Government Lava Challenge Students in Bradley Merkl-Gump's eighth grade social studies classes participated in an exciting activity that demonstrated how different forms of government would impact an emergency situation. Based on the classic Lava Crossing Challenge team building exercise, the students organized according to five different forms of government; Direct Democracy, Despotism, Monarchy, Oligarchy and Republic/Representative Democracy. Then they were tasked with getting all of their classmates across a "lava field" to safety. |

STAR and LinkIt Assessments
The STAR Assessments by Renaissance, STAR Reading and STAR Math, are comprehensive literacy and math universal screeners that are computer adaptive. These assessments will provide teachers with current, reliable and valid data quickly so they can target instruction, monitor progress, provide students with instructional materials, and intervene and enrich where needed. Student reports will be provided to families after each assessment.
The LinkIt! Benchmark assessments help teachers determine student progress on specific topics in Language Arts and Math that are expected learning in a particular grade level/course. The LinkIt! assessments indicate progress on state standards, assisting teachers to target areas of instruction.
LinkIt! Benchmarks will occur a minimum of two times during the school year.
The following provides parents with more information on the STAR Assessments and the LinkIt! Benchmarks and how they are used
Parents Guide to STAR Assessments
Maximizing instructional time for our students is paramount and performance data supports our teaching staff in designing more purposeful and targeted instruction. Our goal is to make sure that every child is on target for success, and we thank you for your continued efforts at home.
Sincerely,
Amy L. Sacks, Ed.D

Counselor's Corner
Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. In fact, suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues.
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month —a time to raise awareness of this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. We use this month to shift public perception, spread hope and share vital information to people affected by suicide. Our goal is ensuring that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help.
For more information about Suicide Prevention Awareness Month as well as additional resources please visit https://www.nami.org/Get-Involved/Awareness-Events/Suicide-Prevention-Awareness-Month
Middle School Handbook Highlights

Violations of this dress code may result in a warning from the teacher or an administrator, and/or the request that a change of clothing be supplied by the parent/guardian. For more information about the dress code please see page 12 of our PV 2022-2023 Middle School Student Handbook. | Cell Phones Students are reminded to keep cell phones off and away during school hours unless instructed by teachers to bring them to class for learning purposes. If you want to contact your child during the school day please contact the West main office at 484-977-7210 and we will be sure your child gets the message asap. If a student is seen using their cell phone without permission it may be confiscated. We are a collaboration of community leaders, clinicians, students, school district representatives, and families who believe that having meaningful, inclusive conversations about substance use and addiction will support individuals and their families in their efforts to develop healthy coping skills and access support whenever there is a need. Learn more about us. See the link below for a number of programs that Be a Part of the Conversation offers.
