Move to Adapted In Person
Timeline
District 34 will move to Adapted In Person on Wednesday, April 7. Here is how we get there:
- March 5: Open selection for parents to choose In Person or GOAL (remote) in PowerSchool.
- March 11: (Noon) Selection window closes; buildings begin placement/scheduling
- adjustments
- April 2: No school (previously designated non-attendance day on approved calendar)
- April 5-6: Staff Planning Days: No Student Attendance - No Asynchronous Learning
- April 5 (tentative date): Parent program: Cultivating Resilience During COVID with Doug Bolton, PhD
- April 7: (Late start) First Day of Adapted In Person, kickoff of District-wide “SELebration”
- April 7, 8, 9: SELebration continues with transition activities, adapting to new routines and demands, building classroom community
The District will be using planning days on April 5-6. Five planning days were provided to every school district in the state by the Illinois State Board of Education to prepare for changes in schedules and environments during the pandemic. Those days do not have to be made up at the end of the year.
The transition to trimester 3 will happen as scheduled on Monday, March 8 (so, your T3 selection will take effect on that day). Then, your selection of In Person or GOAL for Adapted In Person will take effect on April 7.
March 5-11: Selection In PowerSchool
Starting on Friday, March 5, PowerSchool will open for every parent to select either "In Person" or "GOAL." That selection will take effect starting on April 7, and will remain in effect for the rest of the school year. If you do not make a selection, current Hybrid students will move to Adapted In Person; GOAL students will remain in their GOAL classroom/remote environment.
Regardless of your selection for Trimester 3, you can choose either In Person or GOAL for the remainder of the school year during this selection period.
Some information about Adapted In Person is included in this newsletter; the District will provide comprehensive information and FAQs on or before Monday, March 8.
Take Time for SELebration
Staff will have focused professional development on cultivating resilience during COVID, led by Doug Bolton, PhD, who has used his degrees in clinical psychology, school psychology and educational leadership to support students with social, emotional and behavioral challenges in schools.
The District also is offering a virtual parent program with Dr. Bolton, Cultivating Resilience During COVID, tentatively scheduled for the evening of April 5. We will provide more information when the date and time are confirmed.
Health & Safety Protocols in Adapted In Person
District and building leaders are reviewing the questions and concerns submitted in the parent survey, and will address as many as possible by Friday, March 5, and throughout the selection window of March 5-11. Here's a start!
Distancing/Contact Tracing: We will continue to maintain as much distance as possible given the in-person enrollment and physical space we have. Based on an early review of parent survey responses, we expect to have approximately 85% of students attending in person (compared to 80% in hybrid); given those numbers, depending on classroom size and the number of students in a classroom, distancing could be as little as 3’. Given that distancing, we know that contact tracers will be doing more work to reach out to the additional close contacts, and we are likely to see an increase in close contacts. (Again, those of you who are fully vaccinated will not have to quarantine as close contacts.)
Tents: The District has ordered two tents for each school to provide additional opportunities for outdoor learning, mask breaks, etc., even on rainy days.
Air Circulation: The District will continue to allow for 50% outside air, in the building, which helps exchange the air approx. 5 times per hour.
Cleaning/Custodial: Our custodial staff will continue to do their outstanding work, but the increased amount of in-person time and numbers will mean that before and after lunch, additional sanitizing wipes will be provided for staff and students to ensure cleaning of the spaces where they eat.
Lunch Distancing & Dividers: At lunch, 6’ distancing along with divider use will be strictly enforced. Building administrators and staff are working on scheduling and spacing plans to ensure that distancing, and the District has ordered dividers (see the photo below) for every in-person student in grades 1-8.

Updated Travel Guidelines
As of February 23, 2021, the Cook County Department of Public Health updated the recommendations for quarantine after travel, which reference and align with the City of Chicago’s Travel Order.
There are now more states on the yellow list (up to 15 daily cases/100K). If you are traveling to a yellow state, no COVID test or quarantine is required upon return. You must maintain strict masking and social distancing and monitor your health for COVID-19 symptoms, both during and after travel.
If you travel to a state on the orange list (more than 15 daily cases/100K), you must follow the quarantine guidelines, even if you visit the state for less than 24 hours:
- 10-day quarantine - OR -
- Pre-arrival negative test result (no longer than 72 hours prior to arrival) with strict masking, social distancing and avoidance of in-person gatherings, or test upon return home (see Flick Park testing info below). District 34 will not accept rapid COVID-19 tests at this time; we will only accept a PCR test as proof of a negative COVID diagnosis. - OR-
- (NEW!) Be fully vaccinated, defined as two weeks after the second dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or two weeks after one dose of a single-dose vaccine, without symptoms and maintain strict masking and social distancing
Those who have had COVID-19 do not have to quarantine after travel (for 90 days after onset of symptoms or (if asymptomatic) their positive test).
In all cases, those who have traveled must continue to:
- Monitor for symptoms for 14 days of returning from travel
- Practice distancing and mask wearing
No-Cost COVID-19 Testing at Flick Park
You can take advantage of the convenient testing site at Flick Park (by appointment only). While it's the PCR test (not a rapid test), results generally come back in about 24-36 hours.

The 5Essentials Survey Window: February 3 to April 2, 2021
The window for the state-mandated 5Essentials Survey opens tomorrow!
Your input on this statewide survey -- given to parents of all students throughout the state of Illinois -- allows us to help us improve our schools for our students. As a parent, taking the survey will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness. The statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered for the Illinois State Board of Education by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
Effective Leaders
Collaborative Teachers
Involved Families
Supportive Environments
Ambitious Instruction
Prior research in more than 400 schools shows that schools strong on at least 3 of the 5Essentials are 10 times more likely to improve student outcomes.
Please click here or the button below to take the parent survey. We ask that you take the survey for each school in which you have a child. We will be pleasantly persistent in the coming weeks as we hope to reach 100% participation before the survey closes on April 2, 2021. We plan to use the results of this year's survey to give us a clear picture of our schools' climate and culture. Results will be found on the 2021 Illinois State Report Card for each D34 school.

IT'S SPRING BREAK: Tips to Keep Your Child Safe and how to send a "no-use" message to your child.
No matter how you plan to celebrate this week, spring break is a perfect way for parents and caregivers to talk about underage drinking & other drugs. Use these tips to ensure that your child stays safe and sober this spring break:
Make expectations clear regarding alcohol and other drugs.
- Plan ahead. Figure out transportation and know all the locations your child might be during break.
- Check in with your child at various points throughout the night.
- Talk with parents of your child's friends. Find out if they also have a clear "no-use" message with their child.
- Have a plan. Talk to your child about potentially risky situations they may face, such as being offered alcohol/other drugs or riding in a car with someone who is under the influence. Together, come up with ways on how they can make the healthy choice to remain substance-free.
Please visit gncy.org for additional information.
Events, Programs & Activities Around the Community
This system is used exclusively for distribution of school-approved flyers. Your email address will not be shared or used for any other purpose. You also will be able to visit your school’s website to see school-approved digital flyers by clicking the Peachjar button on each school’s website.
Note: Peachjar is free to our schools because community partners pay a small service fee to post and distribute digital flyers (typically much less than the cost to copy and deliver paper flyers).
