Message from Principal
Spartan Parents & Guardians,
Last week, I had the honor of welcoming all SHS staff back on August 31st. The staff were welcomed by the Spartan Cheerleaders and the band. All staff members arrived eager to begin the new year. Staff worked together throughout the day creating interactive activities that will be used in their classrooms. The day ended with a well attended staff BBQ sponsored by the Booster Club.
Spartan students were on campus last week as well taking photos, paying fees, and bringing a lot of excitement into the building. The week concluded with an excellent win by our football team. The student body was energetic and positive throughout the game!
The Spartan staff are excited to welcome back students starting Tuesday, September 5th and Wednesday, September 6th.
We are looking forward to an exciting year!

Important Update regarding FERPA Forms
Restriction of Release of Directory Information (FERPA)
An IMPORTANT update! This form has changed since your student entered the Stanwood-Camano School District. Due to the effect it has on our SHS yearbook, we are asking ALL families to resubmit the form.
It designates your privacy preferences in regards to the Military, Higher Education and all Public/District/Local publications. Please read the form carefully.
Please return the completed form to Christy Headrick in the Counseling Office by Friday, September 15th, 2023. BE ADVISED: If you mark any of the boxes labeled Public, District or Local, your student will NOT be included in the annual yearbook.
Parent Academy and Open House Information
New parents/guardians to SHS are invited to our annual Parents/Guardians Academy. This event will take place on Tuesday, September 5th, 2023 at 8:00 am in the PAC, where administrators will welcome you. Parents/Guardians will receive a tour of the school along with a presentation on important school year information.
Monday, September 11th from 6:30 to 8pm, SHS will have an Open House where parents and guardians will have a chance to meet the Administrative team, walk their student's schedule and meet the teachers! More information to come!
Big changes are coming to financial aid applications this year. The Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) would like to help students and families navigate these changes.
The 2024-25 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will not be available until December 2023. The WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid) will also be delayed until the FAFSA opens. Applications usually open October 1st of a student’s senior year, so this is a major shift in the college planning process.
The good news is that this delay is due to positive changes in the financial aid application process:
The FAFSA form will be shorter and less complex.
More students will be eligible for federal Pell Grants, and the average Pell award will be larger.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.
With our 50 big yellow school buses returning to the roads this week, we urge you to help keep everyone safe by brushing up on the rules when it comes to school buses loading or unloading students.
You must ALWAYS stop if you are traveling in the same direction as the school bus.
On a two-lane road, traffic in both directions needs to stop.
If there are three or more lanes, or a divided roadway, you are not required to stop if you’re traveling in the opposite direction of the bus.
Please keep in mind that even if you are not required to stop, you need to proceed with caution.
Failure to stop for a school bus can run you a $500 ticket.
Remember that 20 mph school zones are active again — so please drive cautiously near our schools and crosswalks!
Check out your student's route and bus stop information for the 2023-24 school year now at our Bus Route Information webpage, which includes instructions on how to use Versatrans eLink.
Menus and more!
We strongly encourage ALL families to submit a Free and Reduced Meal application. We recommend applications be completed online via Skyward Family Access by clicking the Food Service tab and then Applications to begin.

Schedule Changes - A Message from the Counselors
Due to the high volume of new registrations and schedule change requests, we are not able to change schedules at this time unless a student is placed in an incorrect level of class or is missing a class from their schedule.
Many classes are at capacity, meaning If we are able to change a class in a student's schedule, please know that other classes on student's schedule will more than likely need to be changed as well.
SHS's policy is schedules will not be changed based on a teacher request, lunch preference, or wanting to be in a class with a friend.
Schedule change forms will be available in the counseling office on September 8th. The counselors will start accepting schedule change requests forms on Monday, September 11th through Monday, September 18th.
Please understand it may take several days for counselors to look into your schedule change request.

WESCO Spectator Guidelines & Sportsmanship Code
The essential elements of character-building and ethics in interscholastic athletics are embodied in the concept of seven core principles: sportsmanship, discipline, leadership, teamwork, responsibility, dedication, and respect. In an effort to demonstrate sportsmanship in the stands we ask all spectators to adhere to these 5 basic guidelines:
- I will appreciate all good plays and players whether they compete for my team or my opponent.
- I will remember that school athletics are an extension of the classroom, and that learning is taking place.
- I will be positive and use respectful language towards players, coaches, officials, and other spectators.
- I will respect the abilities and sensitivities of our opponents and officials, regardless of the outcome of the contest.
- I will remember that my actions reflect on others, including students, school, and the community.
