Mill Creek Chess Club Closes out its Fall Season!

A number of Mill Creek students have been attending Chess Club, weekly, during the fall, and they have enjoyed it immensely! The club has involved healthy competition, students developing their strategic skills, and a great deal of fun!

An awards ceremony for the Fall 2022 Club Championship was held this past Tuesday. Head Chess Coach Alex Draifinger shared the following:

The Mill Creek Elementary School chess club had its Fall 2022 championship. The Champion was Bennett G. Second place award went to Dhruva M. Third place went to Drake L. The club awarded Rory A. a Citizenship Award for being most helpful with the various aspects in making the club run. Thanks to the administration, John Murtha and Bernadette Quindlen for helping in awarding the children. In addition to the championship, the club has chess lessons from its coach, Alex Draifinger and Asst Coach, Francesca Axe. Lots of fun, comradery, and life lessons were part of the experience!

If you are interested in taking part in this wonderful offering, see the information form for Spring Chess Club later in the newsletter under "Extra-Curricular/Community Events..."

FROM MR. ORTMAN and MR. MURTHA

Happy Holiday Season, Mill Creek Community!

The Winter Holiday Season is a wonderful time for most of us, but it can be a difficult time for families in need. Challenges in providing for one's family during the Winter Holiday Season are magnified. As a school Community, we ask the Greater Community for their generosity through charitable donation drives like the Holiday Project. We also recognize that these asks can feel like a lot, especially when the national/world economic situation is not ideal.

If you are able to give to the Mill Creek Holiday Project, please know that we greatly appreciate your generosity. If you are unable to give at this time, please also know that we understand. For those who may be able to give just a little this year, we would ask that you consider donating to our upcoming Snowball Shootout, which will also benefit our Mill Creek Holiday Project. We ask for a $1 donation or whatever you can give. See flyer below for more details.

Thank you for your generosity to those in need this Holiday Season, whether that generosity is financial, simple acts of kindness, or both!

Instructional Spotlight - Ms. Thomas, 2nd Grade

Always the creative teacher, Ms. Thomas found a clever way to have her 2nd Grade students engage in descriptive writing. They are doing mystery food writing. She is having each student pick a favorite food. Then, they have to brainstorm a variety of ways to describe the food. Then, they have to take that information and turn it into a short writing piece, describing the food to others. Their food descriptions will have a hidden title, and they will be put on display in the hallway. Passersby will have an opportunity to read the description and, based on the description, guess the food (they can reveal the hidden title to see if they are correct). Ms. Thomas' students were very excited to see if they can provide strong enough clues and descriptions for readers to correctly identify their favorite food!

Earlier this week (see picture below), they were practicing as a whole class!

Student Laptop Expectations

Central Bucks Technology & Innovation Department is asking us to stress the importance of laptop case use for students (grades 3-6) when they transport their laptops and when laptops are not in use for extended periods of time. At school, we will be stressing the importance and reminding students of the need to put their laptop in its case during these times (e.g. when taking a laptop from their classroom to specials class). We ask that you stress these practices at home, too. Thank you for your support!

Additionally, if your child loses or misplaces their laptop case, please reach out to the Mill Creek Main Office.

District Laptop and iPad Care

Central Bucks Innovation and Technology Department has asked us to communicate the following regarding District-issued laptop and iPad care...

  • Please encourage your children to use their laptop/iPad bags for carrying devices in school, at home, and to and from each location.
  • Please encourage your children to report issues/problems with their devices, so they can be properly address and fixed as soon as possible.
  • The laptop/iPad payment fee covers accidental damage. Intentional damage may result in a family being billed for the damage.

Schools will be communicating these messages in school as well.

We appreciate your support!

Inclement Weather Procedures for Car Riders - Dismissal

We ask that, on inclement weather days, car riders post a placard with the student(s) family last name, so we can call in names for quicker dismissal. We will do our best to send a message out earlier in the day if we believe inclement weather dismissal is necessary for car riders. Feel free to use the placard template below if you find it helpful.
