Louis Desmarteaux: Tennis Instructor
Louis Desmarteaux
Louis Desmarteaux lives in Boston, Massachusetts today. In Boston, Louis Desmarteaux enjoys working as an intern at a cutting-edge marketing company known as Sapient Nitro. Before his current position, Louis Desmarteaux lived in New York. There, he attended school at St. John’s University. At St. John’s, Louis Desmarteaux worked incredibly hard in order to accomplish all that he did academically. He is quite proud of all of the hard work and effort that he put into his education.
Louis Desmarteaux – On The Boston Pro League
Louis Desmarteaux is a talented and well-known tennis player and athlete. He has put in long hours over the years to be the best he could possibly be. While he started his tennis career in Canada as a youth, he moved on to the Boston Pro League, based in Boston, Massachusetts. This was an incredibly beneficial time for him as he progressed his skills to a whole new level. Day in and day out he would get up at the crack of dawn and crack open a canister of balls, finding his way to the court, rain or shine. He repeatedly put on incredibly long training sessions working on his form, his strength, his stroke and accuracy. He would work off the court on his speed, strength and flexibility in order to achieve the best level of athletic prowess possible for each and every competition. As much as it was athletics, there was a strong mental element as well.
Building those skills means overcoming mental blocks, conditioning your mind to all new levels, taking a loss as a learning experience and much more. The game is as much mental as it is physical and that’s something he learned quickly in his tennis career and training. The Boston Pro League is part of that story, where he learned so much that led to his great story of success. Talent is great, but success comes through hard work and that is something Louis has never taken for granted. Looking back at his time in the Boston Pro League, this is where he found a lot of the foundations for success.
Louis Desmarteaux: Staying in Shape
As a professional tennis player and mentor, it is quite literally Louis Desmarteaux's job to stay in top physical and mental condition, and though Louis is a celebrated athlete, playing tennis he says, simply isn't enough to stay in shape. That is why Louis seeks alternative ways to keep his body guessing, so that it can't adapt, and must increase it's own endurance and strength to keep up with Louis's rigorous routine. Louis says that one of the most important conditioning elements of tennis are explosiveness and endurance. Many tennis games are won and lost simply by being the one who is less fatigued. Louis says that when you're tired, it's easy to misjudge the trajectory of the ball, or make a bad set up or positioning decision. That is why it is a pivotal part of your game to be in excellent physical condition, and to be able to endure hours of moderate to high stress exercise levels. Louis achieves these heights of endurance by doing long runs and bike rides. Louis says that slow and steady exercises like that help work slow twitch muscles, which are key to endurance.
Louis Demsarteaux says that explosiveness is a key element to being a successful tennis player. Being able to predict where the ball will land is one thing, but being able to get to it in time is another. That is why Louis stresses to all his students the importance of training fast twitch muscles, and working on their acceleration speed. Louis says in order to improve explosiveness, he recommends HIIT training. HIIT training stands for High Intensity Interval Training, and is basically exactly what it sounds like. The training is based on short bursts of extremely stressful exercise, followed by brief periods of rest. That is how Louis stays at the top of his game.
Louis Desmarteaux in Africa
The day that Louis Desmarteaux stood on the shores of Malaga and caught scent of the Moroccan winds blowing from across the Alboran Sea, he knew that one day he had to go to Africa. It was a long-time coming when he had finally bought a plane ticket to Casablanca, the first step of a life-changing trip that had come at the peak of his sense of exploration.
Morocco
According to Louis Desmarteaux, there was no better place to start his African journey than in the country that he nearly tasted while on his European vacation. While in Morocco, Louis Desmarteaux learned some key phrases in the Arabic language that became handy throughout the rest of his journey.
Egypt
Louis Desmarteaux’s next stop in Africa was Egypt, where he landed in Cairo and spent days exploring one of the world’s oldest cities. He then ventured into the desert, where he saw many pyramids, the Valley of the Kings and the Great Sphinx of Giza. Louis Desmarteaux had a blast riding on is camel through the desert, and often joked along the way that it was a mode of transportation he could get used to.
Madagascar
To finish off his African tour, Louis Desmarteaux knew he needed to go on a good safari. He figured there would be no better place than the wild island of Madagascar, which is its own ecosystem of rare and beautiful wild creatures. On his trip he saw lions, giraffe, hyenas, cheetahs and other incredible wildlife.
Louis Desmarteaux in Oceania
With a constant yearning to explore, Louis Desmarteaux could not wait to make it to the exciting continent of Oceania, where new people, adventures and wildlife awaited him.
Australia
After enduring over twenty hours of plane travel from the United States, Louis Desmarteaux had the excitement and energy levels of a young dingo when first stepping foot in Sydney. He explored the city and then lounged on the beaches of the Gold Coast for quite some time, before heading north to Cairns. In Cairns, he went scuba diving out in the waters of The Great Barrier Reef, the chance of a lifetime for any scuba diver, even a first timer. Louis Desmarteaux then traveled into the outback, and spent a few nights circled around a campfire with aboriginals who told him about the history of the country’s civil conflict. His next stop was Melbourne, where he drove along the Great Ocean Road and stopped at the famous Bell’s Beach to watch pro surfers take on one of the world’s best-known surf spots.
New Zealand
New Zealand was a whole new kind of trip for Louis Desmarteaux. He camped throughout most of his journey, as the country is very hospitable to those who simply want to free camp in their many scenic areas. He enjoyed lamb sausages and spent much time exploring the vineyards and beautiful mountain ranges of the south island, before going to the north island and exploring their glow worm caves and the serenity of Ninety Mile Beach.
Louis Desmarteaux in Asia
Louis Desmarteaux has an insatiable thirst for adventure, and with every big trip he goes on he pushes himself to cover more ground and take more away from each culture he encounters. His adventurous and adaptable personality carried him through many adventures in Asia, where he experienced life on the complete opposite end of the world.
Japan
Louis Desmarteaux’s tour of Asia began in Tokyo, where he adapted to the culture shock of the Eastern world through enjoying the cozy and technologically advanced luxuries that the elite members of Japan’s upper class flourish in. He enjoyed heaping portions of fresh sushi and had some fun nights of karaoke with some locals. Louis Desmarteaux’s favorite part of Japan, however, was when he went to Sapporo and got to enjoy some world-class skiing.
Korea
Korea was Louis Desmarteaux’s next stop, and was a suitable pit stop on his way to China. Louis Desmarteaux found Seoul to be a fascinating city full of life and delicious street food. He was able to take a tour of the DMZ, where he learned about the lasting effects of the Korean War and saw what it’s like first-hand to be on the border of two countries who are still, technically, at war.
China
When it comes to culture shock, Louis Desmarteaux compared Korea and Japan as small stepping stones towards the bulging rock that is China. And while China exemplifies the unique culture and strong sense of identity that is expected from most great nations, Louis Desmarteaux found himself bothered by the pollution of their major cities and quickly sought refuge in the mountains. He went to Yangshuo, where the unique limestone mountains and rice patty landscape imprinted the pleasant image of China that he likes to remember the country by.
Louis Desmarteaux in Europe
Louis Desmarteaux has an incurable fever for travel. And when he finally made his way across the Atlantic Ocean, Louis Desmarteaux couldn’t wait to explore the cracks and crevices of Western Europe, as it was a trip he had been waiting for his whole life.
France
As his etymology would suggest, Louis Desmarteaux was most excited to explore traces of his heritage in France. He sunbathed on the shores of the French Riviera, got a history lesson on the beaches of Normandy, and explored the world-class vineyards of Bordeaux. He spent much time in Paris, taking in the plentiful food selection at Le Marché des Enfants Rouges as well as all the incredible art museums and structures that decorate Paris with an incredible dose of culture.
Spain
His next stop was Spain, where Louis Desmarteaux embraced the blend of European and Latin culture as one that is no better exemplified than in the Spaniards. Louis Desmarteaux attended bull fights, and danced the night away in clubs throughout Madrid and Barcelona. It was down in Malaga that Louis Desmarteaux caught a whiff of the winds of Morocco across the Alboran Sea, and knew that one day he’d have to go to Africa.
Italy
As Louis Desmarteaux often jokes, his tour of Western Europe could have also been referred to as “The Tour of Romance Languages”. Nonetheless he really enjoyed Italy and felt he got a comprehensive idea of how life is celebrated there. He spent some time in Rome doing sight-seeing at the Vatican and Coliseum, but found the city itself to be a bit too fast-paced and jam-packed with people for a leisurely vacation. He sought refuge in Sicily, where he enjoyed delicious pizza as well as the rich citrus grown at the bottom of Mt. Etna.
Louis Desmarteaux: BPTL Competitor
An avid tennis player his whole life, Louis Desmarteaux first started his career in tennis as an amateur pro in a Canadian junior league. He stood out among his competitors as a fierce opponent and one of the best in the league. In college, he played for his school’s tennis team at St. John’s University. Louis Desmarteaux saw tennis as a way to give back to his university through leading his team to many victories. Being that tennis was his favorite past time anyways, playing on St. John University’s tennis team was the perfect opportunity to mix business with pleasure.
Continuing with that trend, Louis Desmarteaux found it difficult to be a part of a team that trains daily while also pursing his Master’s degree at Northeastern University. Between his rigorous schedule and his need to fund his ever-rising student debt, Louis Desmarteaux decided to limit his time on the tennis court to only when he was giving lessons for supplemental income. He gained a reputation among his students as an instructor who is both incredibly talented and fun to learn from.
While Louis Desmarteaux was excited to see his ability to make a living off of playing his favorite hobby, he had longed to get back into the competitive arena throughout his graduate education. It wasn’t long after receiving his MBA that Louis Desmarteaux signed up for the Boston Pro Tennis League. He is now a top competitor in the league, and enjoys the sense of camaraderie that comes with playing among the most elite players in Boston.
Louis Desmarteaux at Northeastern University
After a successful stint at St. John’s University that resulted in a bachelor’s degree, Louis Desmarteaux knew that he still had a long ways to go in higher academia. In order to get ahead in the business world, he decided to enroll in a Master of Business Administration program at Northeastern University’s Boston Financial District campus, where he could master his business knowledge in an environment that is immersed in tall buildings and other such standing symbols of business success.
Northeastern University is a fully accredited university with graduate and undergraduate programs. Aside from the Boston Campus, Northeastern University also has master program campuses in Seattle and Charlotte. Louis Desmarteaux enjoyed his time at Northeastern, and recommends it to anyone seeking their MBA. According to Northeastern University’s website,
“Northeastern started with an innovative idea: that education is about engaging with the world to solve problems and lead change. That distinctive approach, founded in cooperative education, has created an academic culture that infuses both undergraduate and graduate studies. We empower our undergraduates to chart their own academic path, through more than 90 majors and concentrations and global experiential learning opportunities in 92 countries. Northeastern's 158 graduate programs prepare students for emerging new fields; students are able to take courses on campus, online, or in hybrid formats, creating the educational experience that best meets their needs. The university is committed to the educational success of its students, offering need-based aid and a range of scholarships to reward the outstanding achievements of students from all walks of life.”
Louis Desmarteaux: Always Interested In Tennis

Promoting tennis is something very near and dear to the heart of Louis Desmarteaux. He grew up playing the game, and today is an accomplished player, certified as a Level 1 player by the United States Tennis Association. “I am not sure why I have always been so interested in tennis,” he said candidly. “I have just always had a respect for the sport, and for the men and women who play it. It takes a lot of physical strength in order to play, and I guess I have always appreciated a good challenge.”
Today, Louis Desmarteaux has many young players who come to him for instruction. Stand still in the beginning, he tells the youngest, beginning players. He says that when you are first learning to play the game, it is important to stand still, with your feet in a stationary position. The reason for this, he says, is that what you should be concerned with at this stage are your racket strokes, as opposed to moving around on the court. That will come with time.
He also says that it is important to use the right gear. Louis Desmarteaux says that the gear you purchase doesn’t have to be expensive. A good racket for beginners can cost as little as forty dollars, and a can of tennis balls will cost you as little as three dollars.
Louis Desmarteaux says that a good tennis coach can have you hitting the ball back and forth within a few hours. If you are interested in playing recreationally, this is all you really need to know.

The business includes instruction, and Louis Desmarteaux says that for beginning players, it is important for them to stand still, with their feet in a stationary position. Louis Desmarteaux says the reason for this is that at this stage, what beginners should be concentrating on are their racquet strokes. Moving properly around on the court will come later.
Louis Desmarteaux stresses the importance of using the right gear when playing tennis. He says that quality gear can be expensive, but it does not have to be. Louis Desmarteaux says that a good racquet for beginners can cost as little as forty dollars. A can of decent tennis balls will cost as little as three dollars.
Louis Desmarteaux: Representing Your Country
Louis Desmarteaux may well have been destined to be a professional tennis player. He grew up playing the game, and today says he never really knew why he liked it so much. “It’s always nice to represent your country and know you’re the only guy going,” Louis Desmarteaux said before taking off to another international tournament. “From a playing standpoint, I’m more mature than ever. I’m just hoping to learn from my experience over there.”
Louis Desmarteaux went on to attend St. John’s University in New York City, where he received a degree in Communications. He went on to graduate school at Boston’s Northeastern University, where he earned his Master of Business Administration certification.

I am honored to have had the chance to compete in a variety of different charity tournaments, and I am looking forward to competing in more.”
Louis Desmarteaux says when he competes in fundraising tennis, there is a totally different atmosphere. “In a normal tournament, my goal is always to win. However, at a charity tournament, it is a different kind of thing because everyone who helps these charities in any way, big or small, are winners. The help they do here can change the world, and that is a powerful thing.”
