D. W. Daniel Newsletter
January 2019
Principal's Message
For many people the end of a year and beginning of a new year represents getting rid of the old and welcoming the new. At D. W. Daniel we are also excited about the New Year, and new semester, but we want to also keep, and recognize, those things from the past that make us great. During the first semester students competed academically, athletically, and artistically. They worked hard to excel in their classes. There was not a day (or in many cases a night) where we did not have something going on at the school. For 2019 we aim to meet and exceed this level of greatness. We will continue to work to help each student reach their goals. We will continue to strive for excellence across all realms.
For those visiting D. W. Daniel, you might notice newly planted trees near the front entrance (thank you to Tony Tidwell for planting these trees)! While these trees are new, they are planted in memory of the Sugar Maple that was in front of the former school. When the new school was built in 2012, that particular tree had to be removed. The two trees planted out front are also Maple trees. It is our hope that these will help connect the old school to the new school, connect the past and the future. In 2030 it is my hope that these trees will be as beautiful and large as the previous tree and that future Lions will take advantage of studying under their beautiful foliage.
Happy New Year! We are looking forward to great things in 2019.

New Safety Tip Line
The School District of Pickens County is committed to the safety and well-being of all our students at all times. For that reason, SDPC has created a districtwide telephone tip line for students, their parents, or staff to report school safety concerns.
Submit a report by calling 864-397-4444 and leaving a message or emailing details of your concern to schoolsecurity@pickens.k12.sc.us. When submitting a report, please leave a detailed message that includes the name of the school or office to which the tip applies.

If parents are unable to pick up their children at Daniel on Thursday afternoons, a bus will be provided to drop them off at one of three locations: Walmart in Central, Walmart Market Place in Clemson, and Durham's in Six Mile.
The bus will only run on Thursday afternoons! Parents must fill out the Google Form (https://tinyurl.com/successbus1819) each week before Tuesday for a student to ride this bus.
Math and English assistance will be available each day. If other academic assistance is needed, please email Mrs. Norris, amandanorris@pickens.k12.sc.us, Mrs. Qualkinbush, leeannqualkinbush@pickens.k12.sc.us, or Ms. Bruner, charlottebruner@pickens.k12.sc.us.

Student Council
Winter Semi Formal was a wonderful success! While many hands were involved in executing the event, Dr. Brian Redmond built, painted, and donated the large tree decorations that will be used for years to come. We are grateful for his generosity.
The annual Holiday Assembly provided an opportunity for our performing arts groups to share their talents with the student body.
On January 26 we will crown the 2019 Miss Summit. Plan on coming out to enjoy the event. Gray Lee (Miss Summit 2012) and Sanders Sullivan will be our hosts. Emily Gaddis will provide musical entertainment. We'll also bring back the competition for Mr. DHS. The pageant serves to raise money for our Relay for Life team. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door.

Daniel Foundation
The holiday season has come and gone, but the spirit of giving can continue! As we begin the new year, the D.W. Daniel Foundation would like to thank everyone for their generosity so far! We have been able to fund many school activities and positively impact the lives of our students.
We especially want to take a moment to offer special thanks to everyone who organized and attended the 2018 D. W. Daniel Alumni Legacy Event in November. Even though it was a soggy, cold night and our football team had its playoff game (a good problem to have!), they raised over $1900 at the event! All this money will go directly to help the students and staff of Daniel High School, and we could not be more grateful for our alumni’s generosity!
However, the needs never end, so our efforts never stop! For those people who still want to help (and we always need help!), there are a few areas where you can make a difference. Please consider the items listed below. Remember 100% of our funding goes directly to the needs of Daniel High School, and all monetary donations are tax-deductible!
- Faculty Requests– The Foundation received over $7000 in funding requests from our faculty for this school year for things such as technology, convention fees, transportation costs, and science lab items. Please consider making a donation earmarked for faculty requests! Every little bit helps!
- Buy a customized Daniel fleece blanket- These warm, cozy blankets make fantastic gifts, and 100% of the profits go to support the school! Order forms are found on our webpage on the school site, on our Facebook page, on myschoolbucks.com, and in the school office.
- Shop via smile.amazon.com- This is perhaps the easiest way to support the D. W. Daniel High School Foundation! Just go to smile.amazon.com and choose us as your charity. For every qualifying purchase, we receive 0.01% from Amazon at no additional cost to you! Every little bit makes a difference!
- Join the Foundation- It’s not too late to join!
- Easy donating options- For your convenience, we now offer PayPal (use email danielhighfoundation@gmail.com). This is a great option for those wanting to make an immediate donation or for friends and family who want to support the school from afar. You can also use the membership and donation forms found on our webpage and social media. Just make out your check to the “D.W. Daniel Foundation," indicate the area you wish to fund on the memo line, and either drop it off in an envelope labeled “D.W. Daniel Foundation” to the DHS front office or mail it to us at 140 Blue and Gold Blvd, Central, SC 29630.
Thank you for your continued support, and we wish everyone a very happy new year!

Science National Honor Society
The Science National Honor Society hosted Dr. Nicole Martinez, an assistant professor at Clemson University in Radiological Health Sciences, on December 12th. Students learned about the harmful effects of radiation on DNA in living organisms and different ways to measure radiation. Dr. Martinez demonstrated the detection of radiation on three household objects, including a smoke detector, with a Geiger Counter. She shared many of her research projects, including her research of the radiation-resistant bacteria Deinococcus radiodurans. Researchers are attempting to isolate the DNA that makes this bacteria radiation-resistant and then transfer it to a pill for military use. When taken, this pill will make soldiers more resistant to damage from radiation, which could be useful with threats of nuclear attacks. The SNHS thanks Dr. Martinez for sharing her work with us.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, January 9 at 5:30 pm in room 339. Our guest speaker will be Turghun Matniyaz, a PhD student at Clemson University researching laser fibers. See Mrs. Tidwell for more information.
