Cedar Grove Friday Flash
April 30, 2021
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
Registration for summer school begins Monday, May 3, 2021. The three links below contain general information about both in-person and virtual summer school registration as well as the registration form, which can be accessed in each of these three documents. If you are interested in having your child attend summer school, please be sure to register your child by June 4. As a reminder, summer school for both Cedar Grove students and Wilson Wims students will be held at Wims. Please feel free to call our school office if you have any questions.
We will continue our spring assessments of the Measures of Academic Performance (MAP) in reading and math for students in kindergarten through fifth grades. As a reminder, you may assist your child with technology issues, but please do not assist your child with test questions. Teachers will let students and parents know when their class will be testing.
We are thrilled to inform you that we now have a school song! We are very appreciative of the input we received from our school community, and we are thankful for the creative work that was done by our team of staff members who put these great ideas together into a song that reflects our school values and commitments. Our fabulous music teacher, Cheryl Smoker-Arellano, shares the following message to our families:
"Our School Song is complete! We've been practicing in music class over the last several weeks, and the student response has been overwhelmingly positive. We couldn't feel more excited that the students love the song!"
"A big thanks to all of YOU! The entire Cedar Grove community has played a huge part in making this song. The ideas and thoughts contributed in the school song survey (from last November) by students and staff were used to create the song. A team of teachers including Mrs. Bencal, Mrs. Phillips, Ms. Koar, and Mr. Oedemann worked together with me over the last 3 months to take all of those ideas and craft them into the lyrics of the song. Even if you didn't have a chance to contribute ideas to the survey, we really feel that the song represents EVERYONE and is a wonderful way to celebrate our amazing school community - past, present, and future! Please feel free to open the Cedar Grove School Song video to sing along with your families at home!"
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mr. Derby and Mrs. German
Parent Interest Survey for the 2021-2022 School Year
MCPS recently sent an Interest Survey to help identify how many students would choose to be fully enrolled in a regular, traditional school setting in the 21-22 school year or who would prefer being enrolled in the newly emerging Virtual Learning Academy. Communities are encouraged to respond to the survey to help MCPS determine next best steps in its consideration of starting a Virtual Learning Academy. Families can learn more and complete the interest survey here: https://bit.ly/3gxFVjD

Wanted
The 4th grade will continue to spruce up the school grounds as part of Earth Month and they would still welcome plant/flower donations. If you are thinning out your flower beds this spring, please think about donating your extra plants and flowers to us. We will also happily accept new plants as well. You can drop them off at the front of the school anytime. A special thank you to the Rutz family who were very generous in donating a Meadow Farm's gift card to the school. Thanks for your support. Think green and go green!
Envirothon-Environmental Talent Show
To celebrate Earth Month, the Montgomery County Regional Student Government Association (MCR) is calling on students in grades 1-5 to submit a short video to our Ultimate MCPS Environmental Talent Show!! Share your opinion/knowledge on an environmental issue or show us why you care about the Earth.
The top 3 (selected by popular vote) will receive $25 gift cards, and all selected entrants will receive a signed certificate! Be featured in the countywide video performance as the perfect way to get involved with MCR early on.
4th and 5th-grade entrants can also join a scheduled Zoom to hear from MCR members and student advocates about when and how to start your SGA journey!
Parents and guardians, please click on Ultimate MCPS Environmental Talent Show to view the poster for video ideas and details, and submit your video at tinyurl.com/envirothonsubmission by May 7th!
Holds to Go at Cedar Grove ES -- News for Roomies and Zoomies!
All Cedar Grove Students, whether they are in-building learners (Roomies) or at home learners (Zoomies), can put three books on hold and have three books checked out to them. We have been distributing these holds to go either to the classrooms for our Roomies, or are holding them for pickup on Wednesdays, between 1 and 4 PM.
If you are a parent of a Zoomie, whose holds are ready for pickup, your child will receive an email through their Gmail account. On Wednesday mornings, we will send out a connect ed message as a reminder. Please encourage your child to check their Gmail account regularly for emails from Mrs. Hirschhorn. If the prepared holds are not picked up on Wednesday, you may contact Mrs. Hirschhorn for an alternative arrangement. However, we will only reserve prepared book holds for one week.
As always, feel free to contact Mrs. Hirschhorn if you have any questions.
