Ghosting and its fix
Ghosting and its fix in a Brother Laser Printer
What is Ghosting and how to fix it in a Brother Laser Printer
There are very few things that can go wrong with Brother laser printers and one of them is ‘ghosting’, It basically means the light images from previous print jobs appears back on the newly printed pages. Ghosted images are generally lighter than the fresh text and images on the new page and will make your print look sloppy and unprofessional. Can it be fixed though?
What causes ghosting?
The main causes which lead to ghosting are-
a. The imaging drum unit- Ghosting can be caused by a malfunction of the imaging drum unit. When a drum unit comes to the end of its useable life, it will not discharge properly and leaves traces of the previous printing job. The drum unit can be defective if it is not discharging well between print runs.
b. The fuser unit- When a fuser unit is not heating the toner powder correctly, ghost images can appear when printing. You can make out whether the fuser unit or drum unit is causing the ghosting by looking at the ghosted images. If the images are close together (between 1-2cm and 2-3cm), the ghosting is most likely caused by the drum. If the ghost images are a bit apart (between 4-5cm and 5-6cm), it’s the fuser unit. You can use a 'diagnostic ruler' ruler to pinpoint the source of the ghosting by comparing the marks on the ruler and on the page.
c. Humidity - Humidity affects the toner powder inside a toner cartridge. If it is humid, the toner powder may clump inside the cartridge, due to which the toner powder does not get distributed evenly during printing, which leads to ghost images.
d. Incorrect paper type- If the paper is too thick, glossy or not designed for laser printing, ghosting might occur.
e. Dust and debris inside the printer can also cause ghosting as it might enter the drum unit, transfer unit and fuser unit.
How to fix ghosting?
a. If ghosting is caused by the drum unit, check its life cycle. An error message will be shown to replace the drum unit.
b. If ghosting is caused by the fuser unit, you need to call the Brother Printer Customer support as it needs to be replaced due to over-heating.
c. If humidity is the cause of ghosting, keep your toner cartridges in a cool room with low humidity. It will also last a little longer.
d. If ghosting is caused by incorrect paper, make sure that you are using paper designed for use in laser printers. You can also adjust your paper settings before using thick or glossy paper for laser printers.
e. You should clean the exterior of your Brother Printer regularly to make sure dust and debris don’t go inside the printer.
Some models of Brother Printer also come with a cleaning cycle that makes sure that excess toner powder won’t stick on the drum units. Check if you can run a cleaning cycle or print a cleaning page to get rid of excess toner.
Make sure that all the power cables are undamaged and plugged correctly to the printer. If there is a problem with the power cable, it is possible that it is affecting the way the fuser unit heats up or the way the drum unit holds electric charge.
