Donors Choose!

I want to make sure our students have the materials they need to succeed, so I just created a request for my classroom at DonorsChoose.org: Make Us Tech Complete! I am trying to purchase more iPad stands and styluses for our class.

Give to our classroom by October 22 and your donation will be doubled thanks to DonorsChoose.org. Just enter the code SPARK on the payment page and you'll be matched dollar for dollar (up to $100). I hope you can help!

PBL: Tying it up!

We are well on our way to becoming experts to solve a real-world problem: How can we, as first graders, help our school community become shoe tying experts?”

We have been using QR Codes (typing URLs is hard!) to help us watch videos about shoe tying. Using partners as coaches has been beneficial in helping more students be successful at shoe tying. We are learning four ways to tie: Bunny Ears, Ring Way, Wrap Around, and the Ian Knot. How many do you know?

Our class will begin offering our expertise in shoe tying to others at recess in the coming week. We will be making storyboards with Post-its on Monday as we work towards writing the steps for shoe tying for our ebook. The book making will involve the skills of collaboration, communication, creativity, and help us meet some Language Arts standards for listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

As we finish our ebooks we will be publishing them in iBooks to share our learning with the wider world. Look for updates on our progress on Twitter (@RoomC105)!

YSI, What a Trip!

We had a GREAT time at Alum Rock Park: Youth Science Institute. We went to the Nature Center to learn about animals and their adaptations. We were able to see these animals:

  1. Chilean Rose Tarantula
  2. California Newt
  3. Gopher Snake
  4. Chinchilla
  5. Western Toad
  6. Great Horned Owl
We even got to touch some of the animals! After the lesson, we went on a short hike to the "stinky caves" to smell the sulphur spring water. We then took a class picture, ate lunch, and played on the playground. We had a wonderful time. Thank you chaperones for your time!
