EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of May 15, 2017
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Friends, Families, and FSA Supporters...
Wow! What a weekend!
I'm absolutely elated to share that Georgia's state MathCounts team, led by our own Math Department Chair, Ms. Duzyol, just placed FOURTH in the nation, with FSA eighth grader, Holden Watson, placing eighth!
Holden was invited to the live countdown round against the nation's best 12 middle school students. A total of 224 of the strongest math students from 56 states and territories all gathered in Orlando for this incredible tournament, sponsored by Raytheon. The tournament was streamed live on ESPN.com. In only two short years, Georgia's math team advanced from 28th place to 4th. Wow!
In addition to incredible state math team results, several other FSA teams also had busy and productive weekends as well! Several of our school's chess players brought home huge awards, and our elementary Science Olympiad team competed at state.
What incredible students, families, and faculty we have here at FSA!
All of these exciting developments come on the heels of a very busy year for our academic team coaches and our students. Next weekend, our middle school Science Olympiad team will head to nationals in Ohio, we have several Destination Imagination teams preparing for globals in TN, and our robotics team is now only 5 weeks away from our school's first overseas tournament in Bath, UK!
As we wrap up what has been a truly wonderful year, I wanted to call your attention to our very busy calendar, including Tuesday's deadline for talent show auditions. Our annual Talent Show is a cherished part of FSA's culture where students are able to share some of their many talents with friends and peers in an informal and supportive environment.
I would also like to encourage you to please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to any of our academic teams who are advancing to national/global finals (links and details are below.)
Last, but certainly not least, we have scheduled some fun and informal picnics by grade level (both this week and next ) as just a small gesture of our appreciation for such an amazing year. Our students, parents, and faculty are priceless to us.
We look forward to seeing you soon and thank you again for a record-breaking year. GO MUSTANGS!
With Warmest Regards,
Mr. Kenan Sener
Principal

academic team news
GA Math Team Places Fourth in Nationals
Only two years ago, Georgia placed 28th as a team in this prestigious competition. This year, the team walked away with FOURTH place after dozens of hours of practice and preparation. The growth has been astounding!
Through three distinct programs, MathCounts empowers middle school students of all ability levels and background to achieve their full potential in mathematics. The program cultivates talent in the nation's brightest young minds through the MathCounts competition series; the national program being the pinnacle of a year's worth of progressively prestigious competitions.
We are so incredibly proud of FSA's role in this enormous accomplishment. Great job!

Our amazing performance of stories throughout American History
The play spans American history from the early 1800s to 2001. Actors depicted real-life historical figures from slave and poet, Phyllis Wheatly, to baseball legend, Roberto Clemente. The final scene dramatized a poem remembering the tragedy of September 11th, 2001.
There was even a teacher cameo appearance; Mr. Stiffler did a wonderful job depicting a radio announcer during a historic baseball game!
Many students attended the play, here's what a few had to say:
"It did a good job of spanning American history. I thought the acting was really good. The costumes were amazing, and I liked the audience participation during the united Worker's scene. The students did a great job with the historical play; it would be cool to see more of that in the future. My favorite part was the Radium Girls scene with Neda and James. It was really powerful." -- Chloe R., 10th grade
"The play did a good job of explaining history, and the working conditions was a big point. My favorite scene was the one with the woman who wanted to be a nurse. It showed that if she wanted to be a nurse, she could stand out and become one." --Neel B, 6th grade
"I liked the scene in the hospital when Neda was trying to be a nurse. It showed how determination and hard work can pay off, and it showed how persuasiveness can pay off, too." --Ammar S, 8th grade
"I liked all of the parts. I think students did a great job acting, and I would attend other plays at FSA." -- April G, 5th grade

4th and 5th grade Math League Contest: These are some of the first math contests many students will compete in--and the most fun with math they've ever had! All of the questions cover basic 4th and 5th grade topics, including: properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, time and calendar questions, shapes, perimeter, money, basic ratio and percent, rounding numbers, remainders, integers, and more. These contests challenge students to show their understanding of basic principles through numerical and word problems that encourage an open, flexible approach to problem solving. These contests are provided for inter-school competition, and come with certificates of merit for your school's high scoring students.
CONTEST FORMAT: Each contest consists of 30 multiple-choice questions that you can do in 30 minutes. On each 3-page contest, the questions on the 1st page are generally straightforward, those on the 2nd page are moderate in difficulty, and those on the 3rd page are more difficult. The 4th and 5th-grade contests are for use in each school or district. Since results are not used for inter-school comparisons, they do not enclose a score report form.
***Please note that some exceptional 3rd-grade students may register and they will be taking 4th-grade contest.

Music and Fun 1st Grade
Students have been introduced to stories that turn magical when sound effects and musical lines are added. They are able to get their creative juices flowing while reading a simple story by improvising sounds through both pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments, voice, and body percussion. This club also encourages reading and creating sounds individually, with a partner and in a group environment. We also enjoy putting movements to our songs, stories and sounds. Most stories encourage not only musical growth, but also teaches important character traits like honesty, integrity, and friendship. We have also had an introduction to musicals, dance and vocal/chants.

The Character Ed Trait for May is HOPE
It is so important to teach HOPE to students especially before the summer begins. We want our students to look forward to their summer and to look forward to the next school year. Researchers have found that students who are high in hope have greater academic success, stronger friendships, and demonstrate more creativity and better problem-solving. They also have lower levels of depression and anxiety and are less likely to drop out from school.
