Fowler named a Gemini School by Kansas State Department of Education
TOPEKA — Twenty-one Kansas school districts have been selected for the Gemini Project, the Kansas State Department of Education announced Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017. This is another facet of the Kansans Can School Redesign Project.
Among these schools is Fowler School District.
The redesign of schools, which will become the model for all other school districts in Kansas to follow, will operate off of two pillars: 1) Personalized education and 2) Project based learning. Students will be engaged in the skills that will lead to their personal success. Fowler is creating an educational environment in which students can problem solve, work with others and be responsible employees and employers. “We are no longer in an era where schools need students to gather information and recite it back for a quiz or a test. We are trying to create individuals that can find the information needed to solve a problem and then apply their skills to create solutions. If most people learn by doing, that needs to be a large component of how we teach our students,” says K-12 Principal, Corri McDowell.
The participating schools will engage in a Professional Learning Communities (PLC) with Department of Education Specialists and other schools in the project. The project launch date will occur in August of 2018. Fowler will participate in collaboration with other Gemini and Mercury schools. They must redesign one elementary and one secondary school; and adhere to the redesign fundamental principles.
Fowler has already implemented many of the things in the redesign process such as the Individual Plan of Study (IPS), which creates individualized options for students with a focus on what they will do after they leave high school. They have also implemented project based learning modules where students are given a real life scenario or problem to solve and they have to find and create the solutions utilizing the resources available. Another major component is kindergarten readiness and Fowler already offers a no cost preschool program for 3 and 4 years olds. Jeff Bollinger, the district’s Superintendent, is excited for the opportunity to take part in the Gemini Project. “We have already implemented many of the components that will revolutionize education in Kansas. Education now, and in the future, needs to focus on the individual needs of the learner. That is why we are fully engaged in creating a meaningful education for our students.”

Todd Becker Foundation
Hear The Story. Be Moved.
The assembly tells the real life story of the decisions Todd Becker made that ultimately ended his life. Choice by choice and decision by decision, the message focuses not simply on the one night of drinking turned tragic, but more importantly, the seemingly innocent steps Todd took that led him into the grave all too early.
Based off the scripture Matthew 7:13, the assembly illustrates the two choices we are all faced with - the choice between the wide road or the narrow road: “The highway to destruction is wide and the road that leads to it is easy for the many who choose this way. But the gateway to life is small and the narrow road that leads to it is hard, but only a few ever choose this way.”

Homework & Communication
Students are asked to read 10-20 minutes (depending on grade level) 4 nights per week. Students who meet this goal will be invited to the Principal's Ice Cream Party each quarter. Other homework will be kept to a minimum as we recognize the importance of family time and relaxation after a long day of school.
In addition, every student has a blue folder with a parent note included in the front or inside pocket. Information about assignments, events, and behavior will be shared daily through the parent note and parents are always welcome to share comments or ask questions on the parent note as well. The monthly calendar of enrichment options for the ASPIRE program will be located in the back pocket.
