UTC Oxfordshire
Newsletter - 16th October 2020
Dear all
This week comes to a close with the weather turning a little cooler; with this in mind, please can students have some thermal wear for their Health and fitness lessons. We have continued to be Covid safe and would like to thank you for providing students with face coverings for them to wear on the bus and around the corridors; this and hand sanitising is really helping to keep the school safe.
Today is world food day. World Food Day is an international day celebrated every year around the world on 16 October in honour of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in 1945. World Food Day is not only about celebrating the amazing food that we have the privilege of indulging in, but it is about raising awareness for people who do not have such privilege. There are people all over the world who are suffering from hunger. Starvation is a massive problem in a number of countries, and we need to do more to raise awareness and combat this problem. It seems crazy that we live in a world whereby a large portion of the population can indulge in any sort of food they wish without a second thought while others struggle to put food on the table.
We can also use World Food Day to raise awareness about healthy diets and what our bodies need. In recent times, education has grown about healthy diets and what foods are good and bad for our bodies, but we are not there yet! World Food Day gives us a great opportunity to further education and awareness in this area. If you would like more information then please check out the link http://www.fao.org/world-food-day
We can link this to scientific jobs in the food industry such as the role alumni student Bethany (pictured with her friends on results day) secured on a Degree Apprenticeship in Food Science with Allied Bakeries. You'll be surprised at the number of jobs there are, have a look and see how many you can find.
Progress Consultation Evenings
These are all happening next week for year 12 and year 10, if you haven't booked an appointment yet please do so. These will take place after half term for year 13 and year 11 with bookings opening next week. This will be a virtual event and all appointments are scheduled for an automatic finish after 5 minutes. If you would like further discussion with the subject teacher please feel free to email them after the appointment.
There is a "how to" guide for families on how the video evening will work at the end of this newsletter.
To facilitate the Year 10 event on Thursday 22nd October we will have an early finish of 15:00hrs instead of 16:00hrs.
If students are unable to go home at that time, they are welcome to stay in school in their designated year group study spaces

Congratulations to Jamie! Arkwright Scolarship
The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship programme is the most prestigious Engineering scholarship scheme of its type in the UK. The Scholarships are awarded to high-calibre 16 year old students through a rigorous selection process and support students through the two years of their A-levels, Scottish Advanced Highers or equivalent qualifications. Thank you Sim for supporting Jamie in his application.
Visit from David Johnston MP
David visited us on last Friday and enjoyed seeing the school. He was really impressed with our facilities and how articulate and confident the students were though he declined the offer to have a go at some welding! Thank you to all who engaged with him and gave such a good impression - it is the students who at the heart of the UTC and your enthusiasm for your specialisms and the ethos of the school are what we are so proud to share with our visitors.
OPPORTUNITIES!
EVER THOUGHT OF BEING A GOVERNOR?
Becoming a school governor is an invaluable role, contributing to “transforming lives through learning” of all Activate Learning Education Trust (ALET) learners. This is an extremely rewarding opportunity to make a difference and give something back to the local community. Becoming an ALET governor will allow you to use and develop your skills in a board-level environment. You would also be joining the largest volunteer network force in the country, with over a quarter of a million volunteers governing state funded schools in England.
We currently have a vacancy for a parent governor - you can find out more about what a parent governor does here, and would be very happy to talk this through informally with any parents who would like to find out more.
Please either contact us or Heledd Walker, Head of Governance ( Clerk@alet.org.uk) to find out more.
