The Connector
News from the Lancaster County School District, May 2023

Lancaster County Community,
It's hard to believe the 2022-2023 school year is drawing to a close. I bet if you asked the parents of a senior graduating high school this year, they would tell you it feels like just yesterday when they dropped their child off at kindergarten. Isn't it interesting how the days seem long, but the years fly by?
As we celebrate our staff during Teacher Appreciation Week, please know that we celebrate you as well. It's the strength of our partnership that sets the tone for a successful school year.
In addition to Teacher Appreciation Week we are celebrating the following groups this month: School Principals' Day (May 1), School Lunch Hero Day (May 5), School Nurse Day (May 10), Speech Pathologist Day (May 18).
Thank you for all you do. We couldn't do it without you!
Dr. Jonathan Phipps
LCSD Superintendent

Superintendent Search Input Needed
The Lancaster County School District Board of Trustees has retained the South Carolina School Boards Association (SCSBA) to assist in their search for a new superintendent. The Board of Trustees is seeking input from district and community stakeholders as an essential element of the search process. We will have focus group meetings later in May to collect input. We will distribute details soon. An online survey is available for you to share your input. Here is the link:

Anyone wishing to provide any additional comments or ask specific questions may email Judy LeGrand, SCSBA Superintendent Search Coordinator, at jlegrand@scsba.org. All comments and suggestions will remain anonymous. SCSBA will compile the information received from the online survey and the focus groups and report the results to the Board of Trustees.
2023 SC Mathematics Standards
The public review period for the proposed standards began on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, and will end on Monday, June 12, 2023. Public comments must be submitted via the online survey forms. The link to the online survey is included below. Included in the survey narrative is information for submitting feedback. More detailed information regarding the organization of the standards and the theoretical foundations that informed this work are included in the draft standards document, also linked below. All stakeholders are invited to review the draft standards and provide feedback using the online forms below by Monday, June 12, 2023.

Better Hearing and Speech Month
LCSD supports Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM). Each May, this annual event provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and hearing health.
We have 19 Speech therapists/pathologists working in our school district. Our therapists and pathologists provide appropriate speech-language services in all levels across the district. Starting with our early childhood and Pre-K, elementary, middle, and high schools with no school level underserved. They get the pleasure of working with students exhibiting the full range of communication disorders, including those involving language, articulation (speech sound disorders), fluency, voice/resonance, and swallowing, and whom may have other disabilities such as Developmental Delay, Learning Disorders, Other Health Impairment, Autism, Intellectually Disabled.
Our therapists make a difference in the lives of our students daily!

All three students were invited to the Lancaster County Council meeting Monday night for recognition. They were quite impressive sharing their art and essays with the Council Council members!
