Y'all ... Thank You!
(I thought I'd keep the commentary short this week.)
Have a great weekend,
--Jarod
Cohort Walk Through Feedback
- Kindergarten students are producing writing, and they can explain the parts of the writing workshop. Those kiddos can talk about the writing they are producing as well.
- Kindergarten students are developing personalized writing goals and following through on those goals.
- First graders are looking back in their notebooks to confirm facts they know.
- Second graders are engaging in thoughtful reading conferences with their teachers.
- (There are lots of good things happening in third grade, but we didn't have an opportunity to observe third grade classes today.)
- Fourth grade ELA isn't in the reading cohort this year, but we dropped by to visit. Students in fourth grade are responding to books using a choice board of response options.
- Fourth grade students are responding to books through partner talks.
They also left me with a few ideas for things we might consider:
- Use possible student directed time (i.e., book buddies, independent reading, etc.) to pull guided reading or strategy groups.
- When students are reading independently, take a minute or two to focus on a single student. Watch for reading behaviors (i.e., eye movement, speed of page turning, etc.) to see if they are reading the books in front of them.
- When working with students identified as English Learners, don't rely only on BAS levels to move them through guided reading groups. Focus on the behaviors in the Literacy Continuum. Once a behavior is noticed consistently, it might be a good idea to move a child into that level guided reading group. Something to consider: English Learners need peer examples of oral language in English. If English Learners are only paired with other English Learners in guided reading, they won't have the opportunities they need to hear oral language in English.
Our classroom visits were amazing, and I can't wait for the next round. Sharon and Dayren will be here February 20 to look specifically at small group instruction (guided reading groups or strategy groups). We'll work on a specific schedule for visits. If you have suggestions for that schedule, let Jarod know.
