PONY NEWS DECEMBER 12TH
HELLO PONIES- A LITTLE TO SHARE ABOUT MR. COLON
I’m the eldest of three children. One is my full blooded opposite, and I also have a half brother from my fathers’ side that recently came to light. My family and friends, work, and active lifestyle are what keep me sane and balanced.
Never having normalcy in my childhood led me to become a young man at a very young age. From coming from a foreign island to the state of Florida in my elementary and middle school; to returning to the island of Puerto Rico for the latter stages of Middle School and High School.
It was during this time that I found that I wasn’t being pushed academically and pondered leaving school. But, not in the way everyone seems to see our children end up. Seeing my parents struggle to put me through private school, and the lack of learning in 7 of my nine courses, I asked my parents if I could be enrolled in public school for my second semester tenth grade year. It was apparent that the level of academia was not up to par for most classes for me so after speaking to my stepfather and mother we decided that I would challenge all courses in the eleventh and twelve grades. The results were awesome! Only class that I didn’t pass was Spanish. To everyone’s surprise, my second language is Spanish.
After taking care of those Spanish hours, moving out, and working; I enrolled in La Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in the spring of ’05 in the pre-med program with a major in Arts of Science. But even here my passion was in question. As I’ve learned in my young life, if your heart isn’t in it, then why do it at all? SO, I decided to change my major and graduated with a bachelor in the Arts of Communications with a minor in Marketing.
Having done community work with high school students with core classes like Math, Science, and English for three semesters and a conversation with my stepfather led me to strive to become an educator. For the past 7 years, my drive has been to be that beacon of structure and stability I never had in my youth to these little scholars. In doing so, instill the academia and critical thinking to make them civilized and progressive citizens.
