Principal's Weekly Update
Term 2 Week 7
RAISE Goal: at Matapu School I always use good Covid-19 hygiene practices - wash/sanitise hands, sneeze/cough into elbow, and walk into school by myself.
Te reo phrase of the week: Nā wai tēnei _____ (Whose ____is this?)
Kia ora,
It is with a heavy heart that I start this week’s newsletter. Earlier in the week an old boy of the school, Nathaniel Robinson, was tragically killed in a car accident. Nathaniel was a much loved student of Matapu School and the news hit our staff and community very hard. We wish to pass on our thoughts, love, and support to Amanda and the whole family at this tough time. As a small gesture of our support we would like to invite our community to drop off a sealed food item to the school office, which we will then deliver to the family later next week. Can we please ask for the food items to be dropped off by Wednesday 3rd June. Your support is very much appreciated.
With the long weekend upon us, it is a good chance to catch up on a bit of R and R. Due to the lockdown, this term is 12 weeks long so we’re just over half way through. Our students are loving being back and it has been great to see so many of them walk into school by themselves. Just a reminder, if you enter our school site, please sign in at the school office. The parents/caregivers of students in Room 6 are able to use the sign in book in the Room 6 cloak bay.
Community Survey
Your feedback is incredibly important to us and we thought it would be timely to send out a quick survey for you to complete to give us an indication of how well the school handled the Covid-19 pandemic and how you found learning at home. We have also asked a few questions about the school donation scheme that will help inform our decision for 2021, as well as your thoughts on how many school camps you expect your child/children to go on in years 5-8. As is the case with all surveys, it really helps if we get a large volume of responses. Please click on the link below, it should only take 5-10 minutes.

Congratulations Honor Espin!
During the lockdown period Honor Espin entered a colouring competition with Carrfields and she won! Honor won an iPad for our school, which she presented to us during assembly today. Thank you so much Honor, the iPad will be put to good use in Room 5.
Stomach Bug
Unfortunately there seems to be a stomach bug going around at the moment. Please keep your child at home if they are unwell.
Have a fantastic long weekend and thank you so much for helping adhere to our Covid-19 guidelines to make sure that our school is a safe and happy place to learn.

My teacher is asleep.
My lovely Teacher was talking to the loudest class in the whole School. She tried to grab their attention many times but she just could not. Her arm slowly starts to slide down her rough desk and then BAM! Her head hits her desk. She starts snoring and the whole class starts laughing their heads off. - Molly
The awesome teacher was fast asleep, most of her students had left to walk home but some had stayed to wait for her to wake up. - Ryder
My Teacher Miss Rawcliffe was super tired, because she did not drink any coffee this morning, so as soon as she sat in her chair she fell straight asleep with her head hitting the table, making a loud band! Surprisingly she managed to sleep through the loud yelling and screaming the class was making. She must have really been knocked out cold! - Zavanah
My game loving teacher obviously doesn’t like staring at the wall as much as she exclaims, as she fell asleep in her comfy black chair after just one minute! - Joseph
Room 2
Splash! The dog bolted off the boat and zoomed into the sand laying at the bottom of the ocean. He then popped up out of the salty water, covered in seaweed. The owner of the dog ran to the side of the boat to see what happened and the owner saw his dog barking for help. So he got a floaty and threw it down to the crying dog. The dog swam to the bright, beaming, orange floaty and he pulled the dog up onto the massive boat. The owner was concerned why the dog jumped off the boat in the first place...

Room 3
This week in Room 3 we have been helping each other with our word finding boggle. It was fantastic to see so many students take this on and share their words. We even found a couple of seven letter words! We really challenged ourselves this week by making floor plans in centimetres for small animal houses, then calculating the whole floor area by multiplying two digit numbers. When the sun came out again we were able to pop outside to measure floor plans for large animal shelters using metre rulers and chalk. We then used our multiplication strategies to work out the area.
The photos are of Bryleigh, Andie, Layla, and Breia at work measuring their large animal shelters.
