Spotlight on AVID volunteer: Brandon Cook
• How long have you been an AVID tutor?
I am currently in my third year as an Avid tutor. But everyone knows that Avid tutor years are like dog years. I guess I am almost in my 21st year.
• What inspired you to become an AVID tutor?
I wanted to give back to the community. I sought out volunteer opportunities, and I read what AVID was about.
A program that helps students reach college was enough to get my attention. My time in the military taught me a lot about the value of a college education. Often times, it wasn't the intelligence, skills, or competence of military leaders that earned them their positions. Often, the deciding factor was that one person had a college degree, while one didn't. I chose to become the group that had a college degree. I hope that I can help one student reach their college dreams. If I can do that, my time will have been worth it.
• What do you like the most about tutoring AVID students?
Obviously, the students are what I like best about tutoring. Each student brings a uniqueness that challenges me to think everyday. I have enjoyed seeing students grow and mature. I love seeing students realize that things that seem complicated are not as complicated as it seemed, but in fact, it is something that they can handle easily. Plus, students make me laugh with their jokes and stories.
• What would you tell someone who's thinking about becoming an AVID tutor?
If you are thinking of doing AVID, you should do it. It is amazing and very rewarding. While some days you may walk away frustrated, you will always know that you made a difference. You may say one thing that a student remembers for the rest of their lives. Passing on our knowledge, skills, life-lessons to the next generation is the way we advance our society. Every student is capable of great things. You may be helping the next - well anything and everything.
What is AVID?
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a District wide system at the Middle and High School level that aims to prepare all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. AVID impacts students throughout the school because teachers use AVID strategies to influence the academic and behavioral skills of their students in all content classes. While there is an AVID elective course for selected students, ALL students benefit because the methodologies, strategies, and expectations are schoolwide, impacting the learning environment and culture of the entire campus.

Annual Asbestos Notification
ANNUAL ASBESTOS NOTIFICATION
January 30, 2017
In 1986 Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). This law required all schools K-12 to be inspected for asbestos containing materials (ACBM).
Those inspections were completed and the management plan for managing all ACBM was filed with the State Department of Education on October 11, 1988. A copy of the management plan for each school is on file in the main office of each respective school, as well as at the Archive Room in the District Maintenance Facility.
Based on this inventory and our construction management records since the inventory was completed, the following schools are considered to be asbestos free.
Elementary Schools Middle Schools High Schools
Aloha Huber Park Conestoga Merlo Station
Bonny Slope Stoller Southridge
Findley Westview
Jacob Wismer
Nancy Ryles
Scholls Heights
Sexton Mountain
Springville
All other schools contain some asbestos containing building materials.
During the calendar year 2016, PBS Engineering and Environmental, a private consulting firm, in accordance with Federal Regulations under AHERA, re-inspected schools twice (once in June and again in December). The results of these inspections are contained within each respective school’s management plan.
