Jason Sytsma has been at Kulshan Middle School for 5 years, teaching Physical Education. An impressive aspect of Mr. Sytsma's class is the opportunity for choice to ensure that all kids are moving and getting physical activity. During the a normal week, there are specific units (e.g. floor hockey) that students collectively focus on; however, Mr. Sytsma also involve a lot of choice based upon student interest. For example, students had the opportunity to choose between specific stations on a Fun Friday, and those stations were volleyball, badminton, football flyers, and Wii Sports.
By providing this choice, one can see a high level engagement in PE, where every student was doing something, moving their bodies and getting some physical movement going. By providing a balance of focusing on a specific sport for a unit, kids are introduced to new sports, games, and athletic concepts; however, if they move into a unit that may not be their favorite they have a lot of choice every once in a while. This reflects the thoughtfulness and attention to detail that Mr. Sytsma takes toward listening and learning from students.
Questions to Ask:
- What types of movement or activity do you enjoy most? How can you build time in for those joyful activities?
- What impact do you think having regular, joyful activities or movement can have on your week?
- What opportunities do you create for trying new things?
Idle Free Pick Up
Idle Free Pick-up at Kulshan: Did you know that idling your car for 10 minutes can put a pound of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? As you pick up your students from school or practice and are waiting in your car, we ask that you refrain from idling cars. Thanks for helping us preserve healthy air for our kids while putting less carbon in the air!

Human Growth and HIV Lessons
Our Kulshan PE teachers will be sharing out the Human Growth and Development and HIV lessons that we will be teaching this Spring. Washington State requires HIV/AIDS prevention education for all students, and families are often curious about the materials and information that will be shared with students. Our PE teachers teach specific lessons which can be previewed here. As always, families may opt their child out of these Human Growth and Development & HIV/AIDS lessons. Please let your child's PE teacher know in writing if that is your choice. Thank you!
