Mrs. Edward's Guidance Lesson
This month during social/emotional learning lessons, students worked on self-talk and Growth Mindset concepts. We have an internal dialogue that can be a powerful influence on perspective and behavior. Learning positive ways to utilize self-talk can be beneficial in problem solving, self-esteem, and managing stressful situations. Research shows that growth mindset can improve student’s test scores, help them overcome academic challenges and engage in deeper learning strategies (Walter, 2014). Students worked to identify ways to incorporate positive self-talk and mindset to influence daily decisions. The school counselor provides an activity to further learning. Ask your student about this activity and the things they’ve learned from it.
Reading & Writing
In 5th Grade will be starting Unit 6: Lessons Learned. Students will focus applying background knowledge and life experiences to gain deeper understanding about a theme.
Essential Question: What lesson can be learned in the face of challenge?
Enduring Understanding:
patterns help us understand our world and make predictions.
readers gain insight by comparing different authors’ approaches to the same topic or theme.
through collaborative conversations, a text is more deeply synthesized.
Writing:
We are just starting the persuasive writing unit. This unit will focus on global conservation issues. Students will choose a topic they are passionate about. Students will then make a public service announcement using Powtoons or Green Screen to share their findings.
Enduring Understanding:
writers structure and organize their opinion essay with supporting reasons and information.
writers elaborate by explaining how their evidence supports their thinking.
writers draft several introductions and conclusions as they revise their essay.
Math Workshop
The fifth graders are finishing up a geometry unit on the classifying of figures.
Essential Question:
- How do objects and their attributes relate to each other?
Enduring Understanding:
- Mathematicians understand that attributes provide information about an object's classification.
The targets for this short unit are the following:
I can understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category.
- I can classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.
Social Studies
Next week, the fifth grade will finish their studies about the U.S. government.
The standards that we covered are:
3a Discuss the importance of political documents such as The Constitution and The Bill
of Rights.
3b Explain how laws are developed, how the government was established and how the
powers of the government are acquired and maintained in the United States.
3c Describe how the federal systems separates the power of federal, state, and local
government in the U.S. and how legislative, executive, and judicial powers are
balanced.
MAP Testing
Mark your calendars! Students will be taking end of year MAP assessments in reading and math during the month of May, specifically the 14th - 16th. These tests are important for many reasons, including assessing student growth, determining next instructional steps, and guiding the school leadership teams. During this timeframe, we appreciate you helping to limit interruptions to testing, such as dental/doctor/orthodontist appointments, vacations, or other unexcused absences. We know some things are inevitable, so please contact your homeroom teacher with any questions, concerns, or conflicts.
Also, during these weeks, please make sure your child has a healthy breakfast and a good night's sleep. We want them to feel their best to perform their best. Thanks for your continued support.
