First of all, thank you to those parents that send their children to school everyday and assist us in guiding your child. More information about our Saturday Academy is down below. It was great seeing some of our students in their assigned shirt colors on Monday. Thank you for assisting your child in participating in our 100th day of school and wearing red. Here is a description of what has been going on in Fifth Grade. You will be receiving a weekly newsletter at the end of the week sharing our learning and what we have accomplished! If you are interested in assisting us please contact Ms. A. Vega, SMISD Parental Engagement Specialist at 956-565-6308 or email at anavega@smisd.net. Now that we are in February, some of our students are preparing for competition in Freer, Texas for UIL on the 18th. Benchmarks #2 are scheduled for the week of the 20th.

Math
Mr. Delgado’s 5th Grade Math Class
This week we are learning to add and subtract fractions with unequal denominators. Every homework that is assigned can be found in their Eureka Homework book (the red book). Each homework also comes with a homework helper that explains each question that they have to complete. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out and send me an email to adriandelgado@smisd.net.
Science🥼
In the Magical World of Ms. Campos’ Science Class…
We have been studying how the Earth rotates on its axis and how it revolves around the Sun. The pictures below show how we modeled the Earth’s rotation on its axis and its revolution, or orbit, around the Sun. We will be going over the different patterns of Earth Science such as tides, setting and rising of the Sun, the moon phases, and others. The homework this week was on Landforms and Planets. The extended work or homework is usually handed out on Monday and it is due on Thursday. Most students lack the vocabulary that should have been learned in 3rd and 4th Grades; therefore this homework is to help them understand what is being introduced in 5th or should have been learned in 3rd or 4th. Please help quiz your child with the essential vocabulary and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns via email at Lcampos@smisd.net or phone (956) 245-1297. Thank you for all you do in assisting your child.

Students are modeling the rising of the Sun, from the East, and setting on the West.
SEL
Social Emotional Learning will be centered on paying attention and focusing while distractions occur. Making friends, being kind, and stop the bullying is an ongoing theme in fifth grade. Our Counselor has been meeting with our students and helping deal with stress and refocusing. You can join your student on her website (Mrs. Agauyo's Counseling Corner). This Tuesday, our students saw a motivational magic show by Oscar Munoz. Oscar brings more than 27 years of experience as a professional motivational speaker and master comic magician. On Wednesday, the students participated in a Bullying Presentation by Lou Ann Sarachene. Ms. Sarachene has 35 years of service in education, serving as a school counselor, principal, and district administrator. She is a representative of David's Legacy Foundation and will have interactive presentations, activities, and parent letters that cover the 2022 Health TEKS on Bullying, Cyberbullying, and David’s Law.
