In April of 2017 the Missouri Department of Education began issuing information about upcoming dyslexia screening legislation. Missouri is one of a handful of states that do not already have such legislation in place. Given that Missouri is a local control state, school districts have considerable autonomy with regard to which screening and diagnostic tools, as well as instructional methods, to implement. However, all must be in place for the 2018-19 school year. We have begun the discourse here in Clinton with this largely K-3rd grade initiative. As we read more about the legislation we have begun more in-depth research on dyslexia.
Here are 8 commonly held myths about dyslexia:
Myth #1: Dyslexia is a visual problem where children see letters and words backwards.
Myth #2: Reversing letters and numbers is a sure sign of dyslexia.
Myth #3: Far more boys have dyslexia than girls.
Myth #4: Children performing well in school cannot possibly have dyslexia.
Myth #5: Dyslexia is an English language phenomena because the English language is so complicated.
Myth #6: Dyslexia can be outgrown.
Myth #7: Dyslexia cannot be diagnosed until the third grade.
Myth #8: Dyslexia is caused by a lack of phonic instruction.
As you read through those myths, did some of them confront some long-held beliefs or thoughts of yours? If so, please take some time to research what dyslexia is, and is not, and what we as educators can do in the regular education classroom to provide interventions or raise awareness about the subject.

Reminder: Health screenings have been rescheduled for Monday, March 12th. Our Wellness Team has already moved over prior scheduled appointments to the same timeslot on the 12th. Please let me know if you need help making changes to your scheduled appointment via the Wellness Portal. I am sorry for any inconvenience having to reschedule has caused and really appreciate all those that are participating.
I need to do a little research on benefits our district offers in regards to worksite products. The term worksite products refer to those voluntary insurance policies you can chose to elect with AFLAC: accident, cancer, short-term disability, etc. What I need from you guys is feedback regarding your experience with AFLAC and how you feel about the policies you might currently have. Do you feel you get good customer service from AFLAC? Are you happy with timeliness of payout of benefits when claims are filed? Do you feel 100% insured by the product? Please email me if you would like to provide feedback.
As always…thank you for all that you do for me. I know the ‘paperwork’ side of things are not at everyone’s forefront and can be hard to make time for. Just know…you are appreciated by the bookkeeper!
Have a great weekend!
Emily

Men Making a Difference, One Donut at a Time
Submitted by: Jill Ragan, CECC Teacher and Director
Recently, CECC hosted its third annual Donuts with Dad event, and had the best attendance to date. With close to one hundred percent of the students’ families represented, the families enjoyed activities that included constructing structures, creative arts, sensory play, and of course donut-eating. We would like to say thank you to Earnie Staashelm, Jake Kenney, Jake Fowler, Jason Abner, and Jarrod Boyles who volunteered to spend some quality time with a child that day.
Research would tell us that men play an important role in the lives of children. Positive interactions during the early learning years help lay a strong foundation for healthy development later in life. Whether that positive male role model is a father, grandfather, uncle, appointed guardian, or a treasured family friend, they are fostering a realistic image of growing up into an adult. In short, young boys grow up to be men and young girls grow up to interact with men, so all the more important to have those early positive interactions. As Harold B. Lee said, “The most important work you will ever do is within the walls of your own home.”
It is never too late to make a difference in the lives of our children, or to develop a new ritual/routine to enjoy with your child. Perhaps all you need is nine minutes a day: three minutes when they wake up, three minutes when they come home, and three minutes before they go to bed (www.ctf4kids.org). Sadly, we can’t all meet around the dinner table every evening and discuss life, but we can make a commitment to cherish every moment we get.
We applaud all the men who were able to attend our Donuts with Dad day. Anytime you have nearly one hundred percent attendance at a school event is A Great Day to be a Cardinal.
