UMAC News- Sept 18
Dear UMAC Families,
I’m so proud of our team as we concluded MAP testing this week, as well as our first math and social studies assessments! It was wonderful reflecting with team as they put forth their best efforts on these assessments.
From these assessments, I will be individually conferencing with each student. This will be a great opportunity for our learners to celebrate their understanding while striving for academic success.
Have a wonderful weekend!Michelle Barrett
History Alive / Science
Our team just concluded our first unit of study of Native Americans and had a blast learning all about the regional tribes of the United States. Students took their first assessment in this subject and will should be bringing them home today for your review.
As discussed at Parent Night we are asking that all quizzes and tests be signed by a parent and returned to school the following day.
For this weekend’s KidBlog, the students’ will be reflecting on their knowledge from this chapter. I am so excited to read these reflections as we had discussions about which region would make the best “home”.
For the next few weeks, we’ll be taking a short break from social studies as we jump into science. In our first science investigation, students will learn about variables and how variables can affect the outcome of an experiment. We will be work together in teams to problem solve, learn how to collect data and analyze results.
Literacy Stations have started!!
This week our UMAC teams completed their first few rounds of literacy workstations. We have been busy during the first weeks of school teaching and modeling for the the students a variety of literacy tasks. I am looking forward to seeing their outstanding independent work during this time! Now that work stations have officially launched, I will be able to begin small guided reading groups next week!
In shared reading, students read a historical fiction text, Storm Warriors. A boy named Nathan learns the importance of courage while being face to face with danger. After some great discussions, our team was able to conclude the author’s message or THEME for this text...courage! We compared and contrasted this text to last week’s text, The Birchbark House, as we completed our first prose constructed response (written response to reading). I’m so proud of my awesome thinkers and writers!
