CHARACTER CHALLENGE
In many ways, this season has been one of change. As the world shifts around us, it's important to remain rooted in the values, like respect, that uphold and strengthen our community. We need to be able to work together with those in our classes, busses and lunchrooms — even those who are unique from us. In the midst of the unknown (and the fear that often accompanies it), remember to ground your actions in character. Then, remain rooted.

YOGA at John Champe
In August 2018, the Office of School Counseling conducted a needs assessment with students and parents. 68.2% of students identified stress as their number one cause of concern and 44.4% of parents identified stress as the number one area of concern for their child. To address this concern, the JCHS PTSA has agreed to sponsor YOGA for Champe students taught by Treehouse Fit Yoga (www.treehousefitva.com)
Yoga increases body awareness, relieves stress, reduces muscle tension, strain, and inflammation, sharpens attention and concentration, and calms and centers the nervous system. Yoga also improves the mood, behavior, and mindfulness of high school students. In 2012, the Journal of Behavioral Health Services & Research reported that students taking yoga reported positive mood and attitude changes, increased energy and improved ability to relax, as well as improved posture.
Classes for 2nd quarter will be on Wednesday's at 8:15am in the Aux gym starting on November 28. The classes are FREE for students and $5 for faculty. You must register to attend. Anyone who registers and does not show will be assessed a $5 NO SHOW fee.
BRING a yoga mat (if you have one, if not one will be provided), bottle of water, and a towel.

November - "Thankfulness Challenge"
For the month of November, our students are focusing on Thankfulness and Gratitude as a way to channel the people, moments or situations in our lives that we are thankful for and can utilize during times of stress. To spread this message, our students are putting together their monthly flyer as well as a Thankfulness Challenge.
Studies have shown that practicing gratitude can have a huge impact on your life. The actual physical makeup of the brain changes and makes people more positive, joyful and content. One way to do this is as simple as writing down or journaling about 3 things you are thankful for every day.
How do you show you’re thankful?
- Say thank you
- Pay it forward
- Acknowledge acts of kindness
- Volunteer
- Make a gratitude list
Why is it important to be thankful?
- Health benefits including less stress
- Higher levels of positive outlook
- Increased confidence
- Promotes good habits and gratitude
