Lexington-Richland School District Five Face Coverings Update
The Lexington-Richland School District Five Board of Trustees has adopted a resolution to “strongly encourage” staff and “encourage” students to wear face coverings on district sites effective immediately. Masks are still required on school buses, which are owned, funded and maintained by the state Department of Education, under the resolution. Visitors must also wear face coverings on district property.
Per the resolution:
Staff Members
Staff members are strongly encouraged to wear a face covering while on district property or conducting business on behalf of the district (e.g. driving a bus, conducting a home visit, supervising athletic events, etc.).
Students
Face coverings are encouraged to be worn by all students and teachers when entering and exiting school buildings, while in the halls and common areas, and while in close proximity to others.
Transportation
As school buses are owned, funded and maintained by the South Carolina Department of Education, students and staff utilizing these buses for transport to and from school will be expected to adhere to the South Carolina Department of Education Face Covering Guidelines for School Buses.
Visitors
Non-essential visitors to district buildings will be limited in accordance with administrative rule KI-R, Visitors. Visitors include, but are not limited to, parents/legal guardians, contract service providers, and delivery persons. Visitors are required to wear a face covering while on district property.
Harassment and Bullying
The district will not tolerate harassment of anyone wearing or not wearing face coverings and will appropriately discipline students, staff, or visitors who engage in behavior that interferes with any student or staff member’s ability to comply with this resolution.
This resolution is intended to be effective until either an Executive Order from the Governor or the State School Board changes their mask guidelines, at which time this resolution will be fully null and void. Click the link to read the resolution in its entirety: Face Covering Resolution
School Improvement Council (SIC) Nominations
WHAT IS SIC?
The School Improvement Council (SIC) serves as an advisory committee for the school. Unlike voluntary school organizations, the SIC is mandated by law to exist in every public school in South Carolina. SICs play a key role in bringing together parents, educators and community stakeholders to collaborate on the improvement of HEC.
WHAT IS INVOLVED?
This group meets once a month and serves as an advisory board to the principal. The SIC helps to establish initiatives, approves the school budget, and gives input to the principal on a variety of issues.
HOW CAN I HELP?
HEC is actively seeking to fill four elected positions on our School Improvement Council (SIC) for the 21-22 school year.
If you are interested in being a part of this group, please email Jason Pollock, Principal, at tjpolloc@lexrich5.org, with a short bio. All interested applicants will be placed on a ballot to be voted on by the parents. Once the ballots are counted, the four candidates receiving the most votes will join the SIC in the fall. Don't miss your opportunity to be a part of this dedicated group to our school! Nominations are due Friday, May 21st.
Important Information for Parents of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders
This spring, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 across the state of South Carolina will take standardized assessments in Math and English/Language Arts. Students in 4th grade will also take SCPASS for Science. To help with your planning, testing dates and details are below. Please help us by ensuring that your child is well rested, has a good breakfast, arrives to school on time, and avoids early dismissals on these days.
Unlike MAP, SC READY and SCPASS cannot be administered virtually. The test can only be administered in-person in a secure testing environment. (Specific testing details and logistics for FIVE students will be communicated directly to those families.)
Information on SC READY and SCPASS can be found on the South Carolina Department of Education website at https://ed.sc.gov/tests/
2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR CLASS ASSIGNMENTS
At this time of year we begin planning for the upcoming school year. Careful thought is given to class placements each year as we consider the unique needs of every child. We will soon begin our process for class assignments for 2021-22. If you have specific concerns about your child’s learning needs or other educational needs, please submit an email to Melanie Harris, Assistant Principal, by Friday May 21st. We will consider all requests and try to match your child accordingly. WE WILL NOT CONSIDER ANY REQUESTS FOR A SPECIFIC TEACHER. Contact Melanie Harris at mcharris@lexrich5.org or at 476-4001.
